Herbert Džordž Vels[1][2] (engl. Herbert George Wells; Bromli, 21. septembar 1866 — London, 13. avgust 1946) je bio engleski novinar, sociolog, istoričar i književnik najviše poznat po svojim delima naučne fantastike kao što su Vremenska mašina, Rat svetova, Nevidljivi čovek i dr.[3] Plodan u mnogim žanrovima, napisao je na desetine romana, kratkih priča i dela društvenih komentara, istorije, satire, biografije i autobiografije. Njegov rad obuhvata i dve knjige o rekreativnim ratnim igrama. Vels se sada najbolje pamti po naučnofantastičnim romanima i često ga nazivaju „ocem naučne fantastike“, zajedno sa Žil Vernom i izdavačem Hjugom Gernsbakom.[4][5][a]
Tokom svog života, međutim, bio je najistaknutiji naprednim stajalištima, čak proročanski društveni kritičar koji je svoje književne talente posvetio razvoju progresivne vizije na globalnom nivou. Kao futurista, napisao je brojna utopijska dela i predvideo je pojavu aviona, tenkova, svemirskih putovanja, nuklearnog oružja, satelitske televizije i nečega što podseća na Svetsku mrežu.[6] Njegova naučna fantastika zamišljala je putovanje kroz vreme, invaziju vanzemaljaca, nevidljivost i biološki inženjering. Brajan Oldis je Velsa nazvao „Šekspirom naučne fantastike“, dok ga je američki pisac Čarls Fort smatrao „divljim talentom“.[7][8]
Vels je činio svoja dela uverljivima unoseći uobičajene detalje uz jednu izuzetnu pretpostavku - nazvanu „Velsov zakon“ - što je novelo Džozefa Konrada da ga 1898. nazove „realistom fantastike“.[9] Njegova najznačajnija naučnofantastična dela uključuju Vremeplov (1895), koji je bio njegov prvi roman, Ostrvo doktora Moroa (1896), Nevidljivi čovek (1897), Rat svetova (1898) i vojnu naučnu fantastiku Rat u vazduhu (1907). Vels je četiri puta bio nominovan za Nobelovu nagradu za književnost.[10]
Velsovo najranije specijalizovano obrazovanje bilo je u oblasti biologije, a njegovo razmišljanje o etičkim pitanjima odvijalo se u specifično i fundamentalno darvinističkom kontekstu.[11] On je takođe je bio otvoreni socijalista od malih nogu, često (ali ne uvek, kao na početku Prvog svetskog rata) simpatizirajući pacifističke stavove. Njegovi kasniji radovi postajali su sve više politički i didaktički, a pisao je malo naučne fantastike, dok je ponekad u službenim dokumentima naznačio da je njegovo zanimanje novinar.[12] Romani poput Kipsa i Istorije gospodina Polija, koji opisuju život niže srednje klase, doveli su do sugestije da je on dostojan naslednik Čarlesa Dikensa,[13] ali je Vels opisao niz društvenih slojeva i čak pokušao, u Tono-Bungahz (1909), dijagnozirati englesko društvo u celini. Vels je bio dijabetičar i saosnivač je dobrotvorne organizacije Dijabetičarske asocijacije (danas poznate kao Dijabetes UK) 1934.[14]

Rodio se u porodici radničke klase. Školovao se do 1879, kad roditelji više nisu bili u mogućnosti da ga finansiraju, pa je postao tapetarski pomoćnik. Taj posao mu se nije svideo, pa je bio srećan kada ga je majstor otpustio 1883. Radio je kao pomoćni učitelj u osnovnoj školi, pa je sa osamnaest godina dobio stipendiju i počeo da studira biologiju. Na univerzitetu se ističe znanjem, ali i interesovanjem za reformu društva kroz ideje socijalizma i platonizma. Izgubio je stipendiju i posvetio se pedagoškom radu. Relativno kasno je počeo da piše. Bio je politički aktivan u socijalističkim krugovima, ali je vremenom postao marginalna politička ličnost. Zanimljivo je da se smatra začetnikom stonih ratnih društvenih igara.
Ženio se dva puta, prvi put sa sestričnom Izabel Meri Vels, 1891. godine, a drugi put sa Ejmi Ketrin Robins, 1895. godine, sa kojom je imao dva sina. Poznate su njegove brojne vanbračne avanture kao i vanbračna deca. Njegov savremenik je bio Žil Vern. U Velsovim delima poenta je bila na posledici upotrebe pronalazaka, i to najčešće mračnim. Njegov roman prvenac bio je Vremeplov koji se bavi potpuno novom idejom putovanja kroz vreme i negativnom utopijom daleke budućnosti.[15]
