The German invasion of Serbia. Both the retreating Serbians and the in-vading Germansivere greatly hampered by the -uery bad condition of the roads. Dazed with hungerthe hopeless column stumbled on, shut off from the pros-pect of everything except its own deplorable situation.Thousands fell by the roadside, overcome by famine andexhaustion. The presence of the aged, of women, and ofyoung children made the spectacle more terrifying than theproverbial retreat from Moscow. The route was strewnwith half sunken motors, carts, and wagons, dead horses andoxen, abandoned implements and weapons, the wreckage ofa nation. But the lugubrious picture was illuminated byheroic touches, the stern endurance and unflinching spiritof the Serbian people unconquerable in death.
