The nymph Lara having offended Jupiter, by disclosing some of his intrigues to Juno, that deity ordered her tongue to be cut out, and banished her to the infernal mansion. Mercury, who was appointed to conduct her into exile, ravished her by the way, and she brought forth the Lares (8;. These deities not only presided over the highways,and the conservation of the public safety, but also over private houses, in most of which the Romans had a particular place called Lararium, where were deposited the images of their domestic gods, the statues of their domes-tic ancestors, and the Lares. Their festival, called Compitalia, was celebrated in January, in the open streets and roads.
