Van der Valsov radijus predstavlja rastojanje između elektrona najudaljenijih od atomskog jezgra i tog atomskog jezgra slobodnih atoma, ili najudaljenijih elektrona i geometrijske sredine celih molekula.
Van der Valsov radijus je dobio ime po Johanesu Dideriku van der Valsu, dobitniku Nobelove nagrade za fiziku 1910. godine.
Zamišljajući atome i molekule kao lopte, čiju površinu grade od centra najudaljeniji elektroni, Van der Valsovi radujusi predstavljaju u stvari poluprečnike tih lopti. Koliko god je zamišljanje molekula i atoma kao loptica pogrešno i naivno sa tačke gledišta kvantne mehanike, u mnogim praktičnim slučajevima to ima svrhe. Na primer, u kristalima koji se sastoje od neke vrste molekula (ukoliko nisu jonski kristali) rastojanje između posebnih molekula koji grade kristalnu rešetku, odgovara poznatim Van der Valsovim radijusima. Ti isti molekuli u tečnom agregatnom stanju takođe zauzimaju prostor koji odgovara Van der Valsovom radijusu.
Van der Valsovi radijusi se mogu posmatrati i kao granično rastojanje na koje međusobno mogu da se približe dva atoma bez međusobnog odbijanja, ili građenja hemijskih veza. Van der Valsovi radijusi za atome su 25 do 50% veći od kovalentnih radijusa istih atoma.

Vrednosti su u pikometrima (pm ili ×10−12 m). Nijansa kutije se kreće od crvene do žute kako se radijus povećava; siva označava nedostatak podataka. 1
