Mit i ritual su dve centralne komponente verske prakse. Iako su mit i ritual obično ujedinjeni kao delovi religije, tačan odnos između dva pojma bio je predmet kontroverze među naučnicima. Jedan od pristupa ovom problemu je „mit i ritual, ili mit-ritualistička teorija“, koju posebno drže Kembridž ritualisti, koji smatraju da „mit ne stoji sam po sebi, već je vezan za ritual“.[1] Ova teorija je još uvek sporna; mnogi naučnici sada veruju da mit i ritual dele zajedničke paradigme, ali ne i da se jedna razvila iz druge.[2]

„Škola mita i rituala“ je naziv koji je dat nizu autora koji su svoje filološke studije usredsredili na „ritualne svrhe mitova“.[3] Neki od ovih naučnika (npr. V. Robertson-Smit, Džejms Džordž Frejzer, Džejn Elem Herison, S. H, Huk) podržavali su hipotezu o „primatu rituala“, koja je tvrdila da je „svaki mit izveden iz određenog rituala i da sintagmatski kvalitet mita je reprodukcija sukcesije ritualnog čina“.[2]

Istorijski gledano, važni pristupi proučavanju mitološkog mišljenja bili su Viko, Šeling, Šiler, Jung, Frojd, Lusijen Levi-Brul, Levi-Stros, Fraj, sovjetska škola i škola mita i rituala.[4]

Tokom 1930-ih, sovjetski istraživači kao što su Jakov E. Golosovker, Frank-Kamenecki, Olga Frajdenberg, Mihail Bahtin, „utemeljili su proučavanje mita i rituala u folkloru i u pogledu na svet popularne kulture“.[5]

Nakon Drugog svetskog rata, semantičko proučavanje mita i rituala, posebno od strane Bila Stanera i Viktora Tarnera, podržalo je vezu između mita i rituala. Međutim, nije podržana ideja da je jedno prethodilo i proizvelo drugo, kao što su pristalice hipoteze o „primatu rituala“ tvrdile. Prema trenutno dominantnom naučnom mišljenju, veza između mita i rituala je u tome što oni dele zajedničke paradigme.[2]
