OP THE BACK 429 From this origin, the superior fibres proceed downwards and outwards, theinferior ones upwards and outwards; and the middle fibres, horizontally; andare inserted, the superior ones into the outer third of the posterior border of theclavicle; the middle fibres into the inner margin of the acromion process, andinto the superior lip of the posterior border or crest of the spine of the scapula;the inferior fibres converge near the scapula, and terminate in a triangularaponeurosis, which glides over a smooth surface at the inner extremity of thespine, to be inserted into a tubercle at the outer part of this smooth surface. TheTrapezius is fleshy in the greater part of its extent, but tendinous at its originand insertion. At its occipital origin, it is connected to the bone by a thinfibrous lamina, firmly adherent to the skin, and wanting the lustrous, shiningappearance of aponeuroses.
