Irska (ir. Éire; škot. Airlann; engl. Ireland) ostrvo je u severnom Atlantiku zapadno od Velike Britanije, od koje je odvojeno Severnim prolazom, Irskim morem i Prolazom Svetog Đorđa. Drugo je po veličini među Britanskim ostrvima. U Evropi je treće a u svetu je dvadeseto ostrvo po veličini.[2]
Čine je pokrajine: Alster, Manster, Konot i Lenster. Ukupno na ostrvu ima 32 okruga. Politički, Irska je podeljena između Republike Irske, koja obuhvata pet šestina ostrva, i Severne Irske, dela Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva, koja obuhvata preostali deo na severoistoku ostrva. Broj stanovnika iznosi oko 6,4 miliona.[3][4] Nešto manje od 4,6 miliona živi u Republici Irskoj dok nešto više od 1,8 miliona živi u Severnoj Irskoj.[5]
Reljef ostrva karakterišu niske planine koje okružuju središnju ravnicu, sa nekoliko plovnih reka koje se protežu ka unutrašnjosti. Ostrvo ima bujnu vegetaciju, kao posledicu blage, ali promenljive okeanske klime, koju ne karakterišu temperaturni ekstremi. Guste šume prekrivale su ostrvo sve do srednjeg doba. Šume su 2013. zauzimale jedanaest posto površine ostrva, dok je evropski prosek trideset pet posto,[6][7][8] i najveći deo njih su neautohtone četinarske plantaže.[9][10] U Irskoj postoji 36 autohtonih vrsta sisara.[11] Irska klima je pod uticajem Atlantskog okeana i stoga je veoma umerena,[12] i zime su blaže nego što bi se očekivalo od tako severne oblasti, mada su leta hladnija nego u kontinentalnoj Evropi. Kišne padavine i oblačni pokrivač su izobilni.
Ljudi su nastanili Irsku oko 8000 godina pre nove ere.[13] Kelti su vladali ovim ostrvom od prvog veka nove ere do 17. stoleća. Hristijanizacija ostrva sprovođena je od petog veka. Nakon invazije Normana u 12. veku Engleska je pokušala da ovlada ostrvom, međutim, to je uspela tek tokom Tjudorovih pohoda u 16. i 17. veku. Ovi događaji doveli su do dolaska kolonista iz Britanije. U poslednjoj deceniji 17. veka, počela je da se sprovodi politika tzv. protestantskog uspona (engl. Protestant Ascendancy) s ciljem siromašenja većinskih katolika i protestantskih disidenata. Ona je nastavljena i u 18. veku. Irska je 1801. postala deo Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva Velike Britanije i Irske. Irski rat za nezavisnost početkom 20. veka doveo je do podele ostrva, stvaranjem Irske Slobodne Države, i Severne Irske, koja je ostala deo Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva. Severnu Irsku su u razdoblju od kraja šezdesetih do devedesetih godina 20. veka potresali nemiri. Nakon političkog sporazuma iz 1998. došlo je do smirivanja tenzija. Godine 1973. oba dela Irske postala su deo Evropske ekonomske zajednice. Irska kultura je imala veliki uticaj na druge kulture, posebno književnost, i u nešto manjoj meri nauka i obrazovanje.
