English: In the form of electrometer shown, the design of which is due to Dr F. Dolezalek, the suspension is a very fine quartz fibre, and is made into a conductor by coating it with a trace of a hygroscopic substance like calcium chloride, which always remains moist. The needle is of very light silvered paper, and the sensitiveness is so great that the needle need only be kept at a potential of 50 to 200 volts. A constant potential can be secured by connecting the fibre with one pole of a battery or dry pile, the other pole of which is put to earth. |
