English: Charles Fort - Kinsale - Battery and Governor's House Built for King Charles II in the 1670s the design is heavily influenced by the French engineer Vauban. The fort is a coastal protection to the approaches to Kinsale harbour.
Wilful, the daughter of an early governor, Coloner Warender, married Sir Trevor Ashurst an officer at the fort. On their wedding night she admired some flowers on the rocks below. Her husband took over from a sentry who was went down to collect some flowers for the lady. This took some time and unfortunately the husband fell asleep and was shot for dereliction of duty at his post by the governor on his nightly round. On hearing the news Wilful threw herself off the battlements and is said to haunt the fort.
