Apart from his endeavors in the academic field, Mr. Petrić has left a considerable legacy in the field of film and theater, as well as in the books and studies which he wrote about theater, film theory and history. His first forays into theater and film date from the period when he worked in Radio Television Belgrade as the editor of the film program and director of drama shows. He also directed several theater plays, including The Theater of Joakim Vujić for which he received the prestigious “Sterija” Award in 1959, as well as the play-oratorio The Word of Light (1966), which was inspired by the epic poetry of the Kosovo cycle, and for which stage music was written by Ljubica Marić. The play only received nine performances before it was banned by the Communist authorities due to its content being deemed “politically inappropriate”. He established the Kino-Theater Foundation in Serbia together with his wife, the actress Dara Čalenić; the Foundation awards two pecuniary prizes (for the best actor and best actress under the age of 30) every year at the Sterijino pozorje Theater Festival in Novi Sad, as well as a monetary award (for the Best Cinematic Sequence) given at the Festival of Film d’Auteur in Belgrade. Aside from the aforementioned, Mr. Petrić has been regularly donating monetary funds to the library of the Yugoslav Film Archive for more than 15 years, as well as to other festivals and cultural organizations.

Regarding Vlada and Harvard's Black Panthers, I was not around when that event took place. but the story is that Vlada was introducing Griffith's Birth of A Nation to an audience at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts when he was dragged from the podium by several members of Harvard's Black Panther Party. This event would have taken place sometime in the early seventies. Understandably the Black panthers felt the film was racist propaganda which it was and is. Did Vlada know he was stepping into a political firestorm when he decided to show the film? I dont know. But either way, having grown up in Yugoslavia where he saw friends and teachers persecuted for stating their opinions, I think he would have argued that Griffith's talent took precedence over the political content of the film, that the film was a work of art and therefore had to be seen. He probably would have said the same thing about Leni Reifenstahl's films even though again he had family members who were killed by the Nazis and their militias. As a matter of fact I know he showed her films in his classes at Harvard. One thing his classes were known for was his use of a 16mm analyzer projector which Vlada controlled with a remote so he could project 16mm prints of Tarkovsky, Eisenstein, John Ford etc and analyze film sequences shot by shot, still framing certain images and running the sequences backwards and forwards all the while explaining the nature of each shot to his students. This was all before laser disc, dvd, streaming etc. The films he made himself all reflect his fascination with editing, special effects, rhythm and sound. His new film on Emily Dickinson which I saw in Belgrade and which I can send you if you would like, is a symphony of digital effects combined with Dickinson's poetry and Vlada's accented voice over commenting on all of the above.

Returning to his earlier life in Yugoslavia, I remember listening to Vlada tell the story of how one of his favorite high school teachers was removed from Vladas class by the police for relating an ethnic joke about Russians. She was sent to a rehabilitation camp where she later died. This would have been shortly after World War II I think. Vlada broke into tears as he related the story, as if it had happened yesterday.
