a.(Plate 25.) Urination causes marked ardor urinae fol-lowed by vesical tenesmus ; every quarter or half hourthe desire to urinate returns ; the emptying of the bladdernever seems complete. The symptoms of vesical catarrhpresent themselves; the urine becomes cloudy and has apungent ammoniacal odor (neutral or even alkaline reac-tion). Bartholins glands do not become inflamed until a laterperiod (Plates 25 and 26), and in comparatively rare casesproliferation of the papillae of the skin occurs (condylomataacuminata). (Plate 24, Fig. 1.) The vaginal mucosa is likewise inflamed, sensitive, anddotted with red points, corresponding to the hyperemiapapillae. The greater portion of the purulent secretiondoes not come from the vagina (which has no glands), butfrom the cervix, which becomes infected at the same time.(Plate 24, 2.) The swollen cervical mucosa is deep redand protrudes at the external os ; a cervical endometritisconsequently exists. At first the process stops at the in-ternal os.

A different course is taken by infection from a latentgonorrhea (gleet of the male, goutte militaire, consisting ofa very short stricture of the pars membranacea with apainless, scanty secretion, especially noticeable as the morning drop ; rarely, sensitiveness of the urethra andepididymis; during sexual excitement darting pains atthe root of the penis). A creeping inflammation arises,the first symptoms of which (ardor urinse and discharge)are usually overlooked. The disturbance becomes moremarked as the process invades the mucous membrane ofthe body of the uterus. In this situation both forms of the disease pursue asimilar course.
