pre-dacious wild beasts. Aside from hereditary birth-marks and the purely local results of in-jury and parasitic irritation, the causes of skin diseases are nervous orblood, or both. The champion blood disease—syphilis—has been calledthe great imitator, because it has manifested itself in all forms ofskin disease, and from this fact it is fair to conclude that all these vari-eties, when syphilis is not present, may be due to blood impurities ofsome other origin. In short, what one blood poison can surely do another may, and so wefind some of the most common forms of skin disease accompanyingthose states of mal-nutrition and imperfect elimination which constitutewhat has long been known as the scrofulous state.
