How to emphasize the main articel and special articles in a category

• This example uses [[Category:Tests for Корисник:Bonzo|(space)]] with a space after the "|" character.

• Please look where this article is placed in the category.

• The order will be sorted like this:

1. space
2. "!"
3. "*"
4. capital ASCII characters
5. "_"
6. lowercase ASCII characters
7. "~"
8. 8-bit Latin-1 and UTF-8 characters

• Notes:

1. Most Wikipedias do not have an agreement / a consensus about what character should be used for the main article or special articles. So in those Wikipedias you may find examples with space, "!" and "*" at the same time.
2. All 8-bit Latin-1 and UFT-8 characters will follow "~".

• The MediaWiki software allows using multiple spaces and underscores ("_") before, inbetween and after the namespace and before, inbetween and after the page name.
• Examples:

    • eo: _ ___ _ User __ talk: _ __ _ _ Gangleri _ ___ _ ___ - this link works
• These spaces and underscores are removed when the link is generated as you can see in the example above.
• If you edit this section you will see:
  • [[:eo:  _   ___     _    User __    talk:   _   __   _ _ Gangleri _   ___   _ ___ ]] generates
    • eo:  _   ___     _    User __    talk:   _   __   _ _ Gangleri _   ___   _ ___  - this link fails
• The example above uses   to document what you will see.   is not removed by the MediaWiki software.

Multiple spaces and the order in a category

• When articles are displayed in a category pages (articles etc.) starting with the serbian letter "Ј" are before the pages (articles etc.) starting with the serbian letter "В".
• If you like to reorder the pages in the "(space)" section you may do the following:

1. Category:Расе паса|(space)(space)Велшки теријер
2. Category:Расе паса|(space)Јазавичар

• Then the serbian letter "В" will be before the serbian letter "Ј".
• It works because the spaces are not "compressed" as in the previous section.

Multiple occurence

Note: This is just "behaviour" which can change due to modifications in the MediaWiki Software without (?) notice.

• Sometimes a page includes a template in order to document how this works. If this template adds all pages automaticaly to a category, the documentation page (normaly in the "Help" or "Wikipedia" namespace) will be added to that category as well.
• If you like to "emphasize" this documentation page "add" the page a seccond time to the category at the end of the page. This will "overwrite" the "previous" order information.

About subcategories

• If you have more then 200 pages (articles, lists, templates, subcategories, images etc.) in a category "XXXX" subcategories will show only together with the first letter if you specify only [[Category:XXXX]] in category "YYYY".
• Maybe it would be the best to use this [[Category:XXXX|(space)YYYY]] where you use a space and "YYYY" is the subcategory of "XXXX".
• Another alternative is to use "!". See below.

• You can see the newest changes in this category with Посебно:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Tests for Корисник:Bonzo (or also Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Tests for Корисник:Bonzo).

Navigation templates for a category with more than 200 pages

Improuving the navigation template

• By adding a redundand "home" to the navigation template users will have all posibilities in the template. A click on "home" is equivalent to a click on "Category". It offers the posibility to see all pages from the beginning from the navigation template. It is up to the user what he likes most.
• Notes:
  • [[:{{ИМЕНСКИПРОСТОР}}:{{СТРАНИЦА}}]] can not be used for "home" because this is (for categories) a selfreferencing link regardles if the parameter "&from=" is used or not. This is why [http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/{{ИМЕНСКИПРОСТОР}}:{{PAGENAMEE}} home] is used in Шаблон:Садржај категорије.
  • Personaly I think this would be best in order to find pages added as [[Category:XXXX|(space)]] or [[Category:XXXX|(space)YYYY]] because "! is not the right "starting" caharacter. Gangleri | Th | T 04:38, 4 Мар 2005 (CET)

What seems to be the best solution

• When using a navigation template in a category with more then 200 pages and users are at a letter (let's say "W") and want to see the subcategories and

1. if you use a space as described at About subcategories
   you can
   1. only click on the category tag
2. if you use a "!" as described at About subcategories
   you can use both
   1. click eigther on the category tag
   2. or on the "!" in the navigation template

• Examples:

1. sr:Category:Расе паса well done!
2. hu:Kategória:Románia települései well done!
   Now you can see there all the subcategories at "the main category page"
   also en:Category:Norse mythology
3. ro:Categorie:Brazilia as method 1 above
4. ro:Categorie:Finlanda as method 2 above

• Notes:

1. It maight be that further versions will show the subcategories at every page.
2. The same applies also for "normal" pages.
3. It maight be that people do not like the ! and so it is something you should discuss in your Wikipedia comunity. Communicate the consensus so that people should now how to use the navigation template.

Common errors when using categories

• There are / there have been lots of examples where categories are containing themself. This will not generate a loop in MediaWiki software any more. Simply take out the "autoinclusion".
