Karl Fridrih Mihael Benc (nem. Carl Friedrich Benz, Karl Friedrich Michael Benz; Milburg, 25. novembar 1844 — Ladenburg, 4. april 1929) je bio nemački automobilski inženjer. Generalno je priznat kao jedan od izumitelja (zajedno sa Gotlibom Dajmlerom) motornog vozila - automobila.[1][2] Njegov Benc Patent-Motorkar iz 1885. smatra se prvim praktičnim automobilom i prvim automobilom stavljenim u serijsku proizvodnju.[3][2] On je dobio patent za automobil 1886.
Njegova kompanija Benc & Cie, sa sedištem u Manhajmu, bila je prva fabrika automobila i najveća u svoje vreme.[4] Godine 1926, spojio se sa Dajmler Motoren-Gezelšaft da bi formirao Dajmler-Benc koji proizvodi Mercedes-Benc između ostalih brendova.
Benc se široko smatra „ocem automobila“[5][6] i „ocem automobilske industrije“.[7]

Karl Benc je rođen kao Karl Fridrih Mihael Vajant, 25. novembra 1844. u Milburgu, sada opštini Karlsrue, Baden-Virtemberg, koja je deo moderne Nemačke. Njegovi roditelji su bili Žozefina Vajant i mašinovođa Johan Georg Benc, za koga se udala nekoliko meseci kasnije. Prema nemačkom zakonu, dete je steklo ime „Benc“ zakonitim brakom svojih roditelja.[8][9][10][11] Kada je imao dve godine, otac mu je umro od upale pluća,[12] a ime mu je promenjeno u Karl Fridrih Benc u znak sećanja na oca.[13]
Bencova prva fabrika i rani izumi (1871–1882)[uredi | uredi izvor]
Godine 1871, u uzrastu od dvadeset sedam godina, Karl Benc se pridružio Avgustu Riteru u pokretanju Livnice gvožđa i mehaničke radionice u Manhajmu, kasnije preimenovane u Fabriku mašina za obradu lima.[14]
Prva godina preduzeća prošla je veoma loše. Ispostavilo se da je Riter nepouzdan, a alati poslovanja su zaplenjeni. Poteškoće su prevaziđene kada je Bencova verenica, Berta Ringer, otkupila Riterov udeo u kompaniji koristeći svoj miraz.[14][15]
Dana 20. jula 1872.[16] Karl Benc i Berta Ringer su se venčali. Oni su imali su petoro dece: Eugena (1873), Ričarda (1874), Klaru (1877), Tildu (1882) i Elen (1890).
