Agnotologija (ranije poznata kao agnatologija) je proučavanje kulturno izazvane ignorantnosti ili sumnje, posebno objavljivanja netačnih ili obmanjujućih naučnih podataka . Smislili su je 1995. Robert N. Proktor, profesor Univerziteta Stanford [1] i lingvista Iain Boal . [2] [3] [4] Reč je zasnovana na starogrčkojj grčkoj reči ἄγνωσις , agnosis, „neznanje“ (up. Atički grčki αγνωτος „nepoznat“ [5] ), i -λογία , -logia . [6] Proktor kao glavni primer navodi reklamnu kampanju duvanske industrije za proizvodnju sumnje u vezi sa kancerogenim i drugim štetnim efektima upotrebe duvana . [7] Uopštenije, termin takođe naglašava stanje kada više znanja o predmetu ostavlja neizvesnije nego ranije.
