3C 273 je kvazar lociran u sazviježđu Djevica.[2] To je bio prvi kvazar koji je ikada identifikovan.
To je optički najscjetliji kvazar na nebu sa Zemlje (m ~12.9), i jedan od najbližih sa crvenim pomakom, z, of 0.158.[6] Svetlostna udaljenost od DL = 749 Mpc (2,4 Gly) može se izračunati iz z.[4] To je ujedno i jedan od najsjajnijih poznatih kvazara, sa magnitudom od −26.7,[7] što znači da ako bi bio udaljen od Poluksa (~10 parseka) na nebu bi se činilo gotovo jednako sjajno kao i Sunce. Kako je sunčeva magnituda 4.83, to znači da je kvazar preko 4 triliona puta svjetliji od Sunca na vidljivim talasnim dužinama. Masa njegove centralne crne rupe izmjerena je na 886 ± 187 miliona solarnih masa pomoću mape širokog spektra emisije.[8]

Ime označava da je to bio 273. objekat Trećeg Kembridž kataloga radio izvora (3C), objavljenog 1959. Nakon što su tačni položaji dobijeni korišćenjem lunarne okultacije koju je obavljao Ciril Hazard na Radio-teleskopu Parkes,[9] radio izvor je brzo povezan sa optičkim duplikatom, neriješenim zvjezdanim objektom. 1963. Maarten Schmidt[6] i Bev Oke[10] u časopisu Nature objavio je par radova u kojima se izvještava da 3C 273 ima značajni crveni pomak od 0,158, postavljajući ga na nekoliko milijardi svetlosnih godina.
Prije otkrića 3C 273, nekoliko drugih radio izvora bilo je povezano sa optičkim duplikatima, prvi je bio 3C 48. Takođe, mnoge aktivne galaksije su pogrešno identifikovane kao promjenljive zvezde, uključujući poznate BL Lac, W Com i AU CVn. Međutim, nije bilo razumljivo šta su ti objekti jer su njihovi spektri bili drugačiji od spektra bilo koje poznate zvijezde. Njegov spektar nije nalik onom normalne zvijezde sa tipičnim zvjezdanim elementima. 3C 273 bio je prvi objekat koji je identifikovan kao kvazar - izuzetno blistav objekat na astronomskoj udaljenosti.
3C 273 je radio-glasni kvazar, a bio je i jedan od prvih ekstragalaktičkih izvora rendgenskih zraka otkriven 1970. Međutim, i do današnjeg dana, proces koji izaziva emisiju rendgenskih zraka je kontroverzan[4] Osvijetljenost je promjenljiva na gotovo svakoj talasnoj dužini, od radio talasa do gama zraka u vremenskim razmacima od nekoliko dana do decenija. Polarizacija sa slučajnom orijentacijom primjećena je u radio, infracrvenom i optičkom svjetlu koje se emituje iz mlaznice velikog obima; te emisije su stoga gotovo sigurno sinhrotronske prirode,[4] zračenja koja nastaje mlazom naelektrisanih čestica koje se kreću relativističkim brzinama. Vjeruje se da su takvi mlazovi nastali interakcijom centralne crne rupe i diska za izbacivanje. VLBI radio osmatranja 3C 273 otkrila su pravilno kretanje nekih od područja koja emituju radio, nadalje sugerišući prisustvo relativističkih mlaznica materijala.[11][12]
Galaksija domaćin[uredi | uredi izvor]
3C 273 leži u centru gigantske eliptične galaksije sa prividnom magnitudom od 16 i prividnom veličinom od 30 lučnih sekundi.[13]
