The [[:mw:Editing|Editing]] team is planning to change the name of the [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Savearticle “<bdi>{{int:Savearticle}}</bdi>”] button to [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Publishpage “'''<bdi>{{int:Publishpage}}</bdi>'''”] and [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Publishchanges “'''<bdi>{{int:Publishchanges}}</bdi>'''”]. “<bdi>{{int:Publishpage}}</bdi>” will be used when you create a new page. “<bdi>{{int:Publishchanges}}</bdi>” will be used when you change an existing page. The names will be consistent in all editing environments.[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T131132][https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T139033]

This change will probably happen during the week of 30 August 2016. The change will be announced in [[:m:Special:MyLanguage/Tech/News|Tech News]] when it happens.

If you are fluent in a language other than English, please check the status of translations at translatewiki.net for [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Publishpage “'''<bdi>{{int:Publishpage}}</bdi>'''”] and [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Publishchanges “'''<bdi>{{int:Publishchanges}}</bdi>'''”].

The main reason for this change is to avoid confusion for new editors. Repeated user research studies with new editors have shown that some new editors believed that [https://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&namespace=8&message=Savearticle “<bdi>{{int:Savearticle}}</bdi>”] would save a private copy of a new page in their accounts, rather than permanently publishing their changes on the web. It is important for this part of the user interface to be clear, since it is difficult to remove public information after it is published. We believe that the confusion caused by the “<bdi>{{int:Savearticle}}</bdi>” button increases the workload for experienced editors, who have to clean up the information that people unintentionally disclose, and report it to the functionaries and stewards to suppress it. Clarifying what the button does will reduce this problem.

Beyond that, the goal is to make all the wikis and languages more consistent, and some wikis made this change many years ago. The [[:m:Legal|Legal team]] at the Wikimedia Foundation supports this change. Making the edit interface easier to understand will make it easier to handle licensing and privacy questions that may arise.

Any help pages or other basic documentation about how to edit pages will also need to be updated, on-wiki and elsewhere. On wiki pages, you can use the wikitext codes <code><nowiki>{{int:Publishpage}}</nowiki></code> and <code><nowiki>{{int:Publishchanges}}</nowiki></code> to display the new labels in the user's preferred language. For the language settings in [[Special:Preferences|your account preferences]], these wikitext codes produce “<bdi>{{int:Publishpage}}</bdi>” and “<bdi>{{int:Publishchanges}}</bdi>”.

Please share this news with community members who teach new editors and with others who may be interested.

Hello!

Hello! I try to register on Serbian Wikipedia but whenever I type the phrase from the window it always tell me that I typed it wrong and it gives me new word and same thign all over... I can't register because of it. Help me. Zivela Srbija! — Претходни непотписани коментар оставио је корисник 208.120.120.106 (разговордоприноси)

Interesting. You should check your keyboard settings, maybe it was set to cyrillic and phrase had to be typed in english, or something like that...--Мирослав Ћика (разговор) 04:43, 14. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

Photographer M. Jovanović in Beograd (1889)

Hi! I have noticed some portraits of famous Serbian personalities (mainly Jovan Belimarković and en:Kosta Taušanović) in a scanned Czech magazine, published 05.04.1889. They are captioned as "from the studio of M. Jovanović in Beograd". Could anyone please check when Mr. M. Jovanović died, to verify if (or when) we can upload & use them? (After verification, feel free to upload them yourself, or tell me here.) Thanks! --Sapfan (разговор) 11:16, 23. август 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

I assume that M. Jovanović is probably Milan Jovanović, brother of Paja Jovanović, who died on 17 March 1944.In the last decades of XIX century, he made portraits of famous Serbian personalities (some of them are listed here). In Serbia, if author died before 1955., images are in public domain. So they could be uploaded here, and later copied to Commons.--Мирослав Ћика (разговор) 15:12, 14. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

Transcription of citynames

Hi! I am Perolinka from Swedish wikipedia. I wonder if it would be possible for someone here that understand serbian language to make a transcription of all names in the template of towns in Cetinje. I would really appreciate that, and it would make a big favour. You could write the transcripted names here.

Thanks! Perolinka (разговор) 21:56, 5. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

And where exactly is the list of names in Serbian that you want to transcribe? And into what language, English or Swedish? Cetinje is a fairly small city in Montenegro, and there are no towns within it. Which makes your question somewhat unclear to me.--Мирослав Ћика (разговор) 04:40, 14. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

I need a translation of the deletion reason, there is a (scaled down) duplicate at Commons, commons:File:180px-Stupovi-1-.jpg and I want to know what to do with this. --Martin H. (разговор) 20:50, 24. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

I could not find the page with deletion reason text. However, there is a large number of images available for that monastery at Commons: [1]. Also, there are 2 monasteries with the same name: Манастир Ђурђеви ступови (Црна Гора) and Манастир Ђурђеви ступови.--Мирослав Ћика (разговор) 15:37, 25. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]
Thanks for you time, I just noticed that I was wrong, commons:File:180px-Stupovi-1-.jpg is not Слика:Stupovi.jpg, it was some other image. Maybe I will find it to replace the 180px trahs version. --Martin H. (разговор) 17:09, 25. септембар 2009. (CEST)[одговори]

Fundraising time is around the corner!

Hello Wikimedians, my name is Sam and I am working for the Wikimedia Foundation during the 2010 Fundraiser. My job is to be the liaison between the Serbian (Српски/Srpski) community and the Foundation. This year's fundraiser is intended to be a collaborative and global effort, we recognize that banner messages that perform well in the United States don't necessarily translate well, or appeal to international audiences.

I'm contacting you as I am currently looking for translators who are willing to contribute to this project, helping to translate and localize messages into Српски/Srpski and suggesting messages that would appeal to Српски/Srpski readers on the Fundraising Meta Page. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together.
Use the talk pages on meta, talk to your local communities, talk to others, talk to us, and add your feedback to the proposed messages as well! I look forward to working with you during this year's fundraiser.

Please translate this message into Српски/Srpski if you can and post it below.Schapman (разговор) 20:57, 7. октобар 2010. (CEST)[одговори]

Fundraiser 2010! Help Us Beat JIMMY!

The Fundraising Committee is issuing all interested community members a challenge: we want you to beat Jimmy. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. We want to run donor quotes, and other wonderful ideas, but we have to have banners that work as well as or better than the Jimmy appeal.

We've just released the highlights from a donor focus group, and the results of our donor survey. With one month to the launch of the fundraiser, the messages we test must be driven by data from our tests and surveys - we can no longer rely on instinct alone.

We've redesigned our fundraising meta pages with the Jimmy challenge; check out the survey results and propose/discuss banners that reflect these findings. Add the banners you think will 'beat Jimmy' here to be tested Tuesday October 12 against Jimmy. Also, please see Philippe's email*Beat Jimmy further explaining the Jimmy Challenge. Hi there Михајло. Thank you for your attention to this and your outreach in your community. To answer your question, I think the best way to do it would be Fundraising 2010/sr and then a redirect to that from translated title, so the translation would be on Fundraising 2010/sr and the <translate title> would redirect to fundraising 2010/sr. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions. Schapman (разговор) 22:42, 7. октобар 2010. (CEST)[одговори]

Fundraiser Update

Greetings Wikimedians! Sorry for the English, anyone who is able to translate is welcome (and encouraged). The 2010 Fundraiser is live and has greatly benefited from all the contributions from our translators. Throughout the fundraiser there will continue to be a need for help with translating and localizing messages. Currently, the core messages need to be updated, as there have been recent additions to the request. You can find all translation requests at the translation hub on meta and you can follow the progress of the fundraiser in real time by tracking the fundraiser statistics. Also for those of you who haven't already, you can subscribe to the translators-l mailing list for all new requests and major changes. Many thanks for your help in truly making this a global fundraiser that you can edit. SChapman

  • Editor Appeals Need Translations

Hi everyone! Sorry for the English, anyone who is able to translate is welcome (and encouraged). Translations are very important to the 2010 fundraiser and those of you who have contributed have done great work. We still have a long way to go though and will continue to need your indispensable skills. Currently, the appeals from Wikipedia editors Kartika, Liliaroja, Abbas and Joan Gomà need to be translated and localized. schapman

Browsing the pages in Latin script

Hello!

I made improved logo for Macedonian Wiki which includes some rare characters (special д and п) in tagline "Слободна енциклопедиjа", and I wonder if this tagline shall be the same in Serbian language?

See here :

I asked admins to update Serbian logo, but they said I shall ask communit first.--Orange-kun (разговор) 17:42, 13. фебруар 2011. (CET)[одговори]

Thanks for that very much! We do need a new logo, with Serbian italic. I think that the one you've made is very good. Letter spacing is a bit larger, and J doesn't have descender (doesn't go under the text line), but other than that it seems more-less the same as the original logo.
On another note, not only (д and п) are differ in Serbian/Macedonian Cyrillic, б (or b in Latin) is slightly different as well (look at the image below)

I don't know if it would be a lot of work to change that as well, but none the less, п and д were the main problem, because they differ the most. I'll drop a note on Serbian on village pump, and in a day or two I'll update the logo. Once again, thank you very much for your work on the new logo! -- Обрадовић Горан (разговор) 22:21, 13. фебруар 2011. (CET)[одговори]

Terms of Use update

I apologize that you are receiving this message in English. Please help translate it.

Dear Wikimedians, the Wikimedia Foundation has been discussing changes to its Terms of Use, and the draft of the new version has been revised. The discussion is still ongoing at m:Talk:Terms of use and everyone is invited to join in. Because the new version is not yet in final form, we are not able to present official translations of it, but unofficial translations into several languages have been provided by volunteers (see translation request). Note that these translations are not official and may become outdated as the English version is changed.

Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 17:34, 15. јануар 2012. (CET)

MediaWiki 1.19

Article translation request

I am trying to find someone who can help to translate User:Russavia/Polandball into Serbian. If anyone could help with that, it would be great if you could drop me a message on email (russavia.wikipedia@gmail.com) or on my Commons talk page (Commons:User_talk:Russavia). All editors have my permission to edit the article at User:Russavia/Polandball to do the translation.

The article already exists on Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Arabic, Dutch, Greek, Swahili, Persian, etc Wikipedias. Any help with translating this article would be greatly appreciated

In return for a translation of the article, I will upload 50 new Serbian-related images to Commons, from a range of subjects. Russavia (разговор) 01:18, 11. мај 2012. (CEST)[одговори]

Update on IPv6

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

2011 Picture of the Year competition

македонскиnorskpolski

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2011 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We are interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year 2011. Any user registered at Commons or a Wikimedia wiki SUL-related to Commons with more than 75 edits before 1 April 2012 (UTC) is welcome to vote and, of course everyone is welcome to view!

Detailed information about the contest can be found at the introductory page.

About 600 of the best of Wikimedia Common's photos, animations, movies and graphics were chosen –by the international Wikimedia Commons community– out of 12 million files during 2011 and are now called Featured Pictures.

From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons Features Pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories.

We regret that you receive this message in English; we intended to use banners to notify you in your native language but there was both, human and technical resistance.

See you on Commons! --Picture of the Year 2011 Committee 20:40, 5. јун 2012. (CEST)

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

Hi,

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed

Please translate for your local community

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!

Thanks!

Localizing images into Serbian

Hi. I localized an image which I created into Serbian (Latin) last night, and uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons - it's now on here attached to your article Blast povrede/Бласт повреде. Since your Wiki has two versions, Latin Serbian and Cyrillic Serbian, should I also produce the image in Cyrillic Serbian? I don't know how, but I'd like the article to show the Latin version of my image on the Latin version of your article, and the Cyrillic version of my image (when I make one) on the Cyrillic version of the article. Is this possible? Thanks! BarkingFish (разговор) 14:19, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Hi to you, too. Btw, I was the one that patrolled you edit. I think it's possible to create some kind of template, which would be able to switch images when the transliterator activates, but for that we'll have to wait for some technically experienced users. Actually, there's a little problem with the article and thus the localized image for blast injuries. For example, it stated "primarne blast povreda" which isn't correct. The singular is "primarna blast povreda" and plural is "primarne blast povrede". I fixed that and now it's the true plural. For the image, singulars are "primarna/sekundarna/tercijarna blast povreda". --Lakisan97 (разговор) 14:38, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Hi. Currently, latin/cyrillic conversion is built in MediaWiki software, and there is no possibility to swap pictures based on script used. But, this should not be problem, we use pictures in Serbian cyrillic, Serbian latin, English... Maybe, the best solution can be to produce numbered, not textually described image. Then, description can be given in File: tag, and its script will be changed together with the rest of the article text. --В. Бургић (реци...) 21:06, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Thank you both for your advice and help. Lakisan97, can I just clarify with you, that the text on the image should be in singular? If it should, I will make corrections at commons to the SVG and upload the repaired image Thanks! BarkingFish (разговор) 22:07, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Well, it's mostly your choice, but in Serbian, if I would to explain something, I would say it in singular form. If you want plural, just change final as /a/ to es /e/ or copy from the article. --Lakisan97 (разговор) 22:21, 6. јануар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. **All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be very low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)**

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition.

Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally.

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

I want to be kept up to date about Wikidata

Kruno Radiljević

Hi, I am a user of it.wikipedia. I've created the page of it:Kruno Radiljević he was a football player who was in the Yugoslavia squad that won the silver medal on the Olympic games of 1956. Fortunately I have found his football career but I can't find any information about his life. Just I now that he was born on 1931 and I have found that now (probably) he is bosniac, but I don't where he is born, if now he is alive, etc etc. As I said he played for Yugoslavia, so do you know some football sources where I can found some info about him? I tried on this website but I can't found nothing. --The Crawler(Tornati dopo 20 anni!) 10:28, 27. фебруар 2013. (CET)

JS for persistent script settings

I notice that after selecting "Latinica" at the top of the page, all links on the page still lead to Cyrillic pages. Have you considered fixing that with JS? Adding something like this:

location.pathname.indexOf( "/sr-el/" ) == 0 && $( function($){
  $("a").attr("href", function( x, href ){ return href && href.replace( /^\/wiki\//g, "/sr-el/" ); })
})

to Mediawiki:Common.js would probably work. --Yair rand (разговор) 23:34, 5. март 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) live on this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

As I annonced 2 weeks ago, Wikidata phase 1 (language links) has been deployed here today. Language links in the sidebar are coming from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text.

It'd be great if you could bring this to this wiki if that has not already happened. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

(Please consider translating this message for the benefit of your fellow Wikimedians)

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

If you'd like to learn about this kind of events earlier in advance, consider becoming a Tech ambassador by subscribing to the mailing list. You will also be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

[en] Change to section edit links

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Detailed information and a timeline is available on meta.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

CYR/LAT solution in Serbian Wikipedia

Hello! I would like to learn in detail about principles and technology used in Serbian Wikipedia to create/store/update twin articles in CYR/LAT. I'm from Tatar Wikipedia, where we also write in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. Our articles are available in either or both scripts (linked via manually added TwinLAT/TwinCYR templates) which is not very convenient.
The need to learn about such principles and technologies is relatively urgent for us, as the issue of ArticleCount has now caused a contentious vote about forced deletion/merging of such articles (closed yesterday), which wouldn't allow people who can use only one script, to contribute into Tatar Wikipedia articles originally created in another script.
History of the issue: Latin script was used for Tatar language in parallel with Arabic from the end of 19th century, gaining wide acceptance by early 1920s, both choked in USSR following Stalin's 1939 decision to enforce Cyrillic. Now predominantly Cyrillic Tatar Wikipedia started as TATLAT by Tatar diaspora outside of Russia, currently ~20% of Tatars live outside of Cyrillic use area. On Dec.24, 2012 Tatarstan parliament has formally approved use of Latin & Arabic scripts again (see TATWIKi CYR article, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty published article in TATCYR or Tatar-Inform.ru Tatarstan's official news-agency article in TATLAT). Currently, active user contributions are ~ 50/50 in Latin & Cyrillic. - Frhdkazan (talk) 06:04, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm not too familiar with the technical implementation of the language conversion system, but it shouldn't be too complicated. I think it's easy enough to make it for ttwiki. As for using the dual system, you just click on a version you want to see and the article gets transliterated from one script to the other. There are tags for evading transliteration, which helps a lot with foreign texts. If you have anything in particular you'd like to know, do ask. --Dungodung (разговор) 24 окт 2013, 19:04 (UTC)
Thanks. I also got some advice at Wikimedia forum.
I see you have resolved ArticleCount issue by allowing use of sole script in the page (whichever's first) and using CYR->LAT & LAT->CYR converters. But what is your policy towards LAT only or CYR only user who wants to contribute into an article originally in another script? Did you implement automatic CYR/LAT synchronization of some sort, do you allow CYR/LAT articles to be different or do you mandate that contributions are only in the original article script? - Frhdkazan (разговор) 09:10, 25. октобар 2013. We have policy VP:SRPSKI. Its third paragraph discusses about changing the script. In a nutshell, articles can be written in either Cyrillic or Latin script. Those two, however, mustn't be mixed. If there is a particular reason to mix the scripts (writing down untranscribed names, for example) we avoid priblems with -{}-. Some users, as you already mentioned, may refuse or are unable to write in one script or another. Nevertheless, everyone should contribute in the original script. Exceptions are regulated by VP:SRPSKI. For example, if we have ten articles about songs of one particular artist and only one of them is in Cyrillic, it should be changed to Latin and vice-versa (so, one series of articles — one script). Next, if the size of the article is doubled (stub → more informations), contributor chooses the script. Finally, if the article isn't doubled but thoroughly cleaned and improved, script can be changed. P.S. We also have some special bot scripts for preventing unintentioned mixing of homoglyphs such as a/а, e/е, o/о, c/с, p/р and others. --Lakisan97 (разговор) 14:42, 25. октобар 2013. (CEST)[одговори]

Introducing Beta Features

(Please translate if necessary)

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. This Thursday, it will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

Would you like to try out BetaFeatures now? After you log in on MediaWiki.org, a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences'. Click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more on the Beta Features page.

After you've tested Beta Features, please let the developers know what you think on this discussion page -- or report any bugs here on Bugzilla. You're also welcome to join this IRC office hours chat on Friday, 8 November at 18:30 UTC.

Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, they will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks. They are very grateful to all the community members who helped create this project — and look forward to many more productive collaborations in the future.

Enjoy, and don't forget to let developers know what you think! Keegan (WMF) (разговор) 19:55, 5. новембар 2013. (CET)[одговори]

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

I apologize for this message being only in English. Please translate it if needed to help your community.

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (разговор) 01:49, 17. јануар 2014. (CET)[одговори]

A requests for comment on Meta-Wiki about Serbian Wikipedia

Apologize for the English, and please translate into Serbian as you see appropriate. This is to inform you that I have motioned to close this RFC as stale because there has been no additional constructive developments or comments to resolve this discussion since July of 2012. In addition, there were no actionable requests made about what should require the Meta community to intervene on Serbian Wikipedia, and it is my opinion that the Serbian Wikipedia is large enough to handle local requests on its own without opening RFCs on Meta-Wiki. (For example, English Wikipedia has many banned users coming to Meta-Wiki to appeal their bans but Meta-Wiki's community has no authority on the English Wikipedia, therefore similar issues local to Serbian Wikipedia should be handled by Serbian Wikipedia community.) Thanks, TeleComNasSprVen (разговор) 07:07, 30. јануар 2014. (CET)[одговори]

Universal Language Selector will be enabled by default again on this wiki by 21 February 2014

On January 21 2014 the MediaWiki extension Universal Language Selector (ULS) was disabled on this wiki. A new preference was added for logged-in users to turn on ULS. This was done to prevent slow loading of pages due to ULS webfonts, a behaviour that had been observed by the Wikimedia Technical Operations team on some wikis.

We are now ready to enable ULS again. The temporary preference to enable ULS will be removed. A new checkbox has been added to the Language Panel to enable/disable font delivery. This will be unchecked by default for this wiki, but can be selected at any time by the users to enable webfonts. This is an interim solution while we improve the feature of webfonts delivery.

You can read the announcement and the development plan for more information. Apologies for writing this message only in English. Thank you. Runa

Changes to the default site typography coming soon

This week, the typography on Wikimedia sites will be updated for all readers and editors who use the default "Vector" skin. This change will involve new serif fonts for some headings, small tweaks to body content fonts, text size, text color, and spacing between elements. The schedule is:

  • April 1st: non-Wikipedia projects will see this change live
  • April 3rd: Wikipedias will see this change live

This change is very similar to the "Typography Update" Beta Feature that has been available on Wikimedia projects since November 2013. After several rounds of testing and with feedback from the community, this Beta Feature will be disabled and successful aspects enabled in the default site appearance. Users who are logged in may still choose to use another skin, or alter their personal CSS, if they prefer a different appearance. Local common CSS styles will also apply as normal, for issues with local styles and scripts that impact all users.

Media Viewer

Greetings, my apologies for writing in English.

I wanted to let you know that Media Viewer will be released to this wiki in the coming weeks. Media Viewer allows readers of Wikimedia projects to have an enhanced view of files without having to visit the file page, but with more detail than a thumbnail. You can try Media Viewer out now by turning it on in your Beta Features. If you do not enjoy Media Viewer or if it interferes with your work after it is turned on you will be able to disable Media Viewer as well in your preferences. I invite you to share what you think about Media Viewer and how it can be made better in the future.

Thank you for your time. - Keegan (WMF) 23:29, 23. мај 2014. (CEST)[одговори]

Latin and Cyrillic

PLEASE IMPROVE THE SERBIAN WIKIPEDIA THERE ARE SO MANY PROBLEMS WHEN IT COMES TO SWITCHING BETWEEN CYRILLIC AND LATIN.

1-THE LOGO OF THE SERBIAN WIKIPEDIA SHOULD HAVE A LATIN VERSION. I'M NOT SURE HOW POSSIBLE IT IS TO HAVE 2 LOGOS. HERE'S HOW A LATIN LOGO SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE THEN MAKE A LOGO LIKE THE SERBO-CROATIAN WIKIPEDIA. SOMETHING LIKE THIS:

2-THE SEARCH BOX IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER DOES NOT SHOW THE RESULTS IN LATIN WHEN SOMEONE TYPES IN LATIN, WHICH IS A PROBLEM. I'M SURE THIS PROBLEM IS FIXABLE BECAUSE IN THE MACEDONIAN WIKIPEDIA YOU CAN SEARCH FOR AN ARTICLE IN LATIN ALPHABETS (TRANSLITERATED MACEDONIAN) AND GET RESULTS SHOWN IN LATIN LETTERS! ALL OF THAT WHEN MACEDONIAN DOES NOT EVEN USE LATIN ALPHABETS.

3-WHEN SOMEONE OPENS AN ARTICLE AND WANTS TO SWITCH TO LATINICA TO READ AN ARTICLE HE HAS TO CLICK TWICE ON LATINICA AND NOT ONCE!

4-ALTHOUGH IN MY ACCOUNT I SAT MY PODESAVANJA FOR LANGUAGE TO SRPSKI LATINICA WHEN I OPEN ARTICLES (WHILE I'M LOGGED IN), THE TOP COLUMNS (CONTAINING RAZGOVOR, PODESAVANJA, BETA.... ETC AND CITAJ, UREDI, ISTORIJA...ETC) AND THE LEFT SIDE COLUMN (CONTAINING GLAVNA STRANA, SADRZAJ..ETC) REMAIN IN CYRILLIC, BUT IN THIS PAGE EVERYTHING CHANGES TO LATIN NORMALLY (IT'S OK HERE BUT NOT IN ARTICLES), SO THERE IS A PROBLEM.

IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE NEGLECTING LATINIC IN HERE AND IT IS JUST WRONG, BECAUSE YOU CLAIM YOU TREAT THEM EQUALLY BUT YOU DON'T, PLEASE WORK MORE ON THESE PROBLEMS OF SWITCHING BETWEEN CYRILLIC AND LATIN. REMEMBER THAT MOST SERBS USE LATIN MUCH MORE COMMONLY WHEN THEY USE THE INTERNET (PARTLY BECAUSE THE INTERNET IS ALREADY DOMINATED BY THIS ALPHABET) AND NOT ALL SERBS PREFER CYRILLIC TO LATIN OR SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT CYRILLIC IS THE ALPHABET THAT SHOULD BE USED FOR SERBIAN LANGUAGE (JUST BECAUSE OF SOME HISTORIC REASONS OR BECAUSE IT IS THE OFFICIAL SCRIPT OF THE SERBIAN GOVERNMENT).

YOU AS AN UNAFFILIATED/ UNBIASED WEBSITE SHOULD NOT BE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT BUT INSTEAD PLEASING ALL SERBIAN LANGUAGE READERS AND EDITORS.

THANK YOU.

For beginning, let's you start to use Caps_Lock button, please!

I don't understand, why you care so much for the Serbian Wikipedia, because you don't know Serbian language, therefore you don't know so much about the Serbian scripts (Latin and Cyrillic) or Serbian alphabets.
Your suggestion is completely pointless, because you probably don't know that some languages use more scripts (for example Azerbaijani language uses 3: Latin script, Cyrillic script and Perso-Arabic script) - if you have any idea how to make their logo look like then?
Let's you try to learn the Serbian language in its basic alphabet - Cyrillic, and it will be great! --CarRadovan (разговор) 17:05, 6. јун 2014. (CEST)[одговори]

Media Viewer is now live on this wiki

Media Viewer lets you see images in larger size

Greetings— and sorry for writing in English, please translate if it will help your community,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Multimedia team is happy to announce that Media Viewer was just released on this site today.

Media Viewer displays images in larger size when you click on their thumbnails, to provide a better viewing experience. Users can now view images faster and more clearly, without having to jump to separate pages — and its user interface is more intuitive, offering easy access to full-resolution images and information, with links to the file repository for editing. The tool has been tested extensively across all Wikimedia wikis over the past six months as a Beta Feature and has been released to the largest Wikipedias, all language Wikisources, and the English Wikivoyage already.

If you do not like this feature, you can easily turn it off by clicking on "Disable Media Viewer" at the bottom of the screen, pulling up the information panel (or in your your preferences) whether you have an account or not. Learn more in this Media Viewer Help page.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments about Media Viewer. You are invited to share your feedback in this discussion on MediaWiki.org in any language, to help improve this feature. You are also welcome to take this quick survey in English, en français, o español.

We hope you enjoy Media Viewer. Many thanks to all the community members who helped make it possible. - Fabrice Florin (WMF) (talk) 23:54, 19. јун 2014. (CEST)[одговори]

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decisions

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

Meta RfCs on two new global groups

Hello all,

There are currently requests for comment open on meta to create two new global groups. The first is a group for members of the OTRS permissions queue, which would grant them autopatrolled rights on all wikis except those who opt-out. That proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Creation of a global OTRS-permissions user group. The second is a group for Wikimedia Commons admins and OTRS agents to view deleted file pages through the 'viewdeletedfile' right on all wikis except those who opt-out. The second proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Global file deletion review.

We would like to hear what you think on both proposals. Both are in English; if you wanted to translate them into your native language that would also be appreciated.

It is possible for individual projects to opt-out, so that users in those groups do not have any additional rights on those projects. To do this please start a local discussion, and if there is consensus you can request to opt-out of either or both at m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Global AbuseFilter

Hello,

AbuseFilter is a MediaWiki extension used to detect likely abusive behavior patterns, like pattern vandalism and spam. In 2013, Global AbuseFilters were enabled on a limited set of wikis including Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikispecies and (in early 2014) all the "small wikis". Recently, global abuse filters were enabled on "medium sized wikis" as well. These filters are currently managed by stewards on Meta-Wiki and have shown to be very effective in preventing mass spam attacks across Wikimedia projects. However, there is currently no policy on how the global AbuseFilters will be managed although there are proposals. There is an ongoing request for comment on policy governing the use of the global AbuseFilters. In the meantime, specific wikis can opt out of using the global AbuseFilter. These wikis can simply add a request to this list on Meta-Wiki. More details can be found on this page at Meta-Wiki. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on m:Talk:Global AbuseFilter.

Thanks,

This is a message from the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee. Translations are available.

Greetings,

I am pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections. This year the Board and the FDC Staff are looking for a diverse set of candidates from regions and projects that are traditionally under-represented on the board and in the movement as well as candidates with experience in technology, product or finance. To this end they have published letters describing what they think is needed and, recognizing that those who know the community the best are the community themselves, the election committee is accepting nominations for community members you think should run and will reach out to those nominated to provide them with information about the job and the election process.

This year, elections are being held for the following roles:

Board of Trustees

Content Translation beta feature coming soon

Hello, we are scheduling the deployment of Content Translation as an opt-in beta feature on the Serbian Wikipedia later this week. Earlier, we attempted testing on the beta server (needs separate login) prior to deployment, however due to unstable conditions on the beta environment it is now advisable to have users test the tool directly on the Wikipedia. Please note, it is an opt-in beta feature only available to logged in users. Please let us know your comments and feedback through the Content Translation talk page or through Phabricator ticket that we are using to track the deployment stages. It is important for us to be aware of any concerns or special requirements on the Serbian Wikipedia before we prepare for deployment, so please do let us know. For more information, please read about how to use the tool. You can also view a short screencast on how to use Content Translation. Please feel free to translate this message for wider distribution. Thank you. --KartikMistry (разговор) 06:20, 27. мај 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

Content Translation beta-feature is now available

Hello, Content Translation has now been enabled as an opt-in beta feature on the Serbian Wikipedia. This is part of the original request for the CEE Spring editing event. To start translating, please enable the beta feature and go to Special:ContentTranslation or to your contributions page and create a new translation by selecting the source language, the article name and target language. If the article already exists then a warning will be displayed. After you translate the article, you can publish it directly as a new page on the Serbian Wikipedia. In case the article gets created by another user while you were translating, you will see an option to save the newly published translation under your user namespace. The number of published pages can be seen on the Content Translation stats page.

Since, this is the first time we have installed the tool on this Wikipedia, there are chances that there may be some problems or service disruptions which we are not yet aware of. We will be monitoring the usage to check for any failures or issues, but please do let us know on the Content Translation talk page or through Phabricator if you spot any problems that prevent you from using the tool. For more information, please read about how to use the tool. More information is also available in the User Guide. You can also view a short screencast on how to use Content Translation. Our announcement is written only in English, and we would really appreciate if this message can be translated to reach more users of this Wikipedia. Thank you. --Runab WMF (разговор) 17:57, 28. мај 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

Pywikibot compat will no longer be supported - Please migrate to pywikibot core

Sorry for English, I hope someone translates this.
Pywikibot (then "Pywikipediabot") was started back in 2002. In 2007 a new branch (formerly known as "rewrite", now called "core") was started from scratch using the MediaWiki API. The developers of Pywikibot have decided to stop supporting the compat version of Pywikibot due to bad performance and architectural errors that make it hard to update, compared to core. If you are using pywikibot compat it is likely your code will break due to upcoming MediaWiki API changes (e.g. T101524). It is highly recommended you migrate to the core framework. There is a migration guide, and please contact us if you have any problem.

There is an upcoming MediaWiki API breaking change that compat will not be updated for. If your bot's name is in this list, your bot will most likely break.

Thank you,
The Pywikibot development team, 19:30, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Wikistats, high number of new editors

Hi, newest Wikistats report shows an unexpected high number of new/active editors for May 2015. Is this to be expected (e.g. some special event, or extra coverage by the media)? Thanks, Erik Zachte (WMF) (разговор) 13:48, 24. јун 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

Proposal to create PNG thumbnails of static GIF images

The thumbnail of this gif is of really bad quality.
How a PNG thumb of this GIF would look like

There is a proposal at the Commons Village Pump requesting feedback about the thumbnails of static GIF images: It states that static GIF files should have their thumbnails created in PNG. The advantages of PNG over GIF would be visible especially with GIF images using an alpha channel. (compare the thumbnails on the side)

This change would affect all wikis, so if you support/oppose or want to give general feedback/concerns, please post them to the proposal page. Thank you. --McZusatz (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (разговор) 07:07, 24. јул 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

Conversion of the Scripts

Dear Users,

I am really interested in knowing how the software of conversion of scripts is working. We would like to do the same for Tunisian Arabic.

Yours Sincerely,

--Csisc (разговор) 15:29, 31. јул 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

Well, you can test here how it works. Basically, you just click on the variant you want to see and the conversion is done automatically. That's because it's fairly easy to convert from Latin to Cyrillic and vice versa. I'm guessing that apart from the standard Arabic script, you would be using Latin script, or some sort of romanization. I have no idea how well they correspond to each other, and thus how easy it would be to implement the conversion. As for the details of the implementation, you'd probably have to look at the code itself. --Ф± 13:14, 1. август 2015. (CEST)[одговори]
Ф: Thank you for your reply. I will try to give here an overview about how the conversion works. In fact, Arabic to Latin Conversion is not based only on the transcribed letter but also on the letter before it and the letter after it. For example: the glottal stop is transcribed according to the vowel preceding it and the one after it. I ask if the conversion could be done in Wikipedia.--Csisc (разговор) 17:14, 3. август 2015. (CEST)[одговори]
If there's a finite set of rules, then it can most likely be done. The problem is generally finding someone to do it :) --Ф± 19:23, 3. август 2015. (CEST)[одговори]
Ф: So, I ask about how to do the software and how to successfully implement it. --Csisc (разговор) 13:35, 4. август 2015. (CEST)[одговори]
Well, if you're a programmer/developer, you can look at the MediaWiki codebase and start from there. When you have a patch ready for applying to the project, you can file a task on Phabricator. If you're not a developer, then I suggest finding one in your community. --Ф± 00:51, 5. август 2015. (CEST)[одговори]

What does a Healthy Community look like to you?

Hi,
The Community Engagement department at the Wikimedia Foundation has launched a new learning campaign. The WMF wants to record community impressions about what makes a healthy online community. Share your views and/or create a drawing and take a chance to win a Wikimania 2016 scholarship! Join the WMF as we begin a conversation about Community Health. Contribute a drawing or answer the questions on the campaign's page.

Why get involved?

The world is changing. The way we relate to knowledge is transforming. As the next billion people come online, the Wikimedia movement is working to bring more users on the wiki projects. The way we interact and collaborate online are key to building sustainable projects. How accessible are Wikimedia projects to newcomers today? Are we helping each other learn?
Share your views on this matter that affects us all!
We invite everyone to take part in this learning campaign. Wikimedia Foundation will distribute one Wikimania Scholarship 2016 among those participants who are eligible.

Wikidata: Access to data from arbitrary items is coming

(Sorry for writing in English)

When using data from Wikidata on Wikipedia and other sister projects, there is currently a limitation in place that hinders some use cases: data can only be accessed from the corresponding item. So, for example, the Wikipedia article about Berlin can only get data from the Wikidata item about Berlin but not from the item about Germany. This had technical reasons. We are now removing this limitation. It is already done for many projects. Your project is one of the next ones. We will roll out this feature here on August 12.

We invite you to play around with this new feature if you are one of the people who have been waiting for this for a long time. If you have technical issues/questions with this you can come to d:Wikidata:Contact the development team.

A note of caution: Please be careful with how many items you use for a single page. If it is too many pages, loading might get slow. We will have to see how the feature behaves in production to see where we need to tweak and how.

How to use it, once it is enabled:

thesswiki project and wikicamp

On behalf of Wikipedia Community User Group Greece, we would like to invite you to be part of an ambitious Wikipedia-inspired project for the City of Thessaloniki. The project is entitled thesswiki, and aims to digitize the history and culture of the city of Thessaloniki and connect the physical monuments to the wikipedia world.

QR codes will be mounted on the sides of buildings or monuments in order to allow users with smartphones, focusing specifically on tourists and visitors, to scan them and instantly access up-to-date Wikipedia entries about all aspects of life in Thessaloniki in their native language. (see QRpedia)

We invite you to support the project and write and extend articles about these monuments in your own languages, as this will benefit visitors of Thessaloniki, from you own country. You can see the actual progress on the following page: meta:thesswiki#Articles of interest

Museums and archives of the city have pledged to open and upload content to Wikimedia Commons, and also support the writting of better articles.

At this point, we are excited to invite neighboring and other international Wikipedia chapters or User Froups, and interested Wikimedians to participate in the project. The project will be officially announced at the opening ceremony of Demetria Festival 2015, the most prominent annual cultural festival taking place in Thessaloniki in September 2015 and an official kick-off event is planned to take place during the weekend of September 26 & 27.

During the kick off event, we will present the project and what has taken place this far to the general public. Moreover, an Edit-athon event and a QR-marathon will take place, and possibly include speeches from international speakers and host a wiki-camp for international participants.

In this framework, we invite you to a 2-day-backstage-visit schedule, especially designed for wikipedians wishing to travel to Thessaloniki during the kick-off event, offering a VIP-tour around the most prominent museums, monuments, and galleries in the city (such as the Museum of Byzantine Culture, the Museum of Photography, and the State Museum of Contemporary Art) and participation in major Dimitria and thesswiki actions. We are aiming to inspire you to write articles in your native wikipedia languages and we are planning to offer accommodation for two nights (25-26 September), and meals as detailed in the attached agenda. (Since the budget for this program is limited, if your chapter/user-group is able to cover travel expenses for you users and you would like to use it instead of our free accommodation offer, you would be more than welcome to use it :). This will help us host even more people!) In case you are interested, please reply ASAP to team@wikimedia.gr and thesswiki@postscriptum.gr to help you arrange all the specifics and provide you further information.

(Sorry for writing in english. Feel free to translate.)

Enable localized glyph in your style sheet

Hi administrators,

I suggest you adding this CSS style into your MediaWiki:Common.css to enable Serbian form in Cyrillic texts:

font-feature-settings: 'locl';
-webkit-font-feature-settings: 'locl';

If you do it, the required variant for Serbian language will be available in Chrome, Opera, Microsoft Edge, etc. For example, if you installed Linux Libertine font, then opened Википедија:Добро дошли in Chrome, you will found б can be displaying as δ. Anyone else got problem?

Wikiproject Erasmus Prize Winners

Dear fellow wikipedians,

My apologies for using English here, please help translate if you are able.
Wikipedia has been awarded the Erasmus Prize 2015. This international prize is awarded annually to a person or institution that has made an exceptional contribution to culture, society or social science. The King of the Netherlands will present the award on 25 November. This will create media attention which will hopefully result in plenty of new volunteers. Prior to the award ceremony we would like to write and improve articles on former Erasmus Prize winners. All 80 former laureates should be notable enough to merit an article.

Please join the project and help us provide our fellow laureates with articles.

Wikimania 2016 scholarships ambassadors needed

Hello! Wikimania 2016 scholarships will soon be open; by the end of the week we'll form the committee and we need your help, see Scholarship committee for details.

If you want to carefully review nearly a thousand applications in January, you might be a perfect committee member. Otherwise, you can volunteer as "ambassador": you will observe all the committee activities, ensure that people from your language or project manage to apply for a scholarship, translate scholarship applications written in your language to English and so on. Ambassadors are allowed to ask for a scholarship, unlike committee members.

This is a message regarding the proposed 2015 Free Bassel banner. Translations are available.

Hi everyone,

This is to inform all Wikimedia contributors that a straw poll seeking your involvement has just been started on Meta-Wiki.

As some of your might be aware, a small group of Wikimedia volunteers have proposed a banner campaign informing Wikipedia readers about the urgent situation of our fellow Wikipedian, open source software developer and Creative Commons activist, Bassel Khartabil. An exemplary banner and an explanatory page have now been prepared, and translated into about half a dozen languages by volunteer translators.

We are seeking your involvement to decide if the global Wikimedia community approves starting a banner campaign asking Wikipedia readers to call on the Syrian government to release Bassel from prison. We understand that a campaign like this would be unprecedented in Wikipedia's history, which is why we're seeking the widest possible consensus among the community.

Given Bassel's urgent situation and the resulting tight schedule, we ask everyone to get involved with the poll and the discussion to the widest possible extent, and to promote it among your communities as soon as possible.

(Apologies for writing in English; please kindly translate this message into your own language.)

Thank you for your participation!

As many of you know, January 15 is Wikipedia’s 15th Birthday!

People around the world are getting involved in the celebration and have started adding their events on Meta Page. While we are celebrating Wikipedia's birthday, we hope that all projects and affiliates will be able to utilize this celebration to raise awareness of our community's efforts.

Haven’t started planning? Don’t worry, there’s lots of ways to get involved. Here are some ideas:

Everything is linked on the Wikipedia 15 Meta page. You’ll find a set of ten data visualization works that you can show at your events, and a list of all the Wikipedia 15 logos that community members have already designed.

If you have any questions, please contact Zachary McCune or Joe Sutherland.

Thanks and Happy nearly Wikipedia 15!

Password Strength RFC

Hello

We have started an RFC on meta to increase password requirements for users that have accounts which can edit MediaWiki:Common.js, have access to checkuser or have access to Oversight.

These types of accounts have sensitive access to our sites, and can cause real harm if they fall into malicious hands. Currently the only requirement is the password is at least 1 letter long. We would like to make the minimum be 8 letters (bytes) long and also ban certain really common passwords.

By increasing requirements on passwords for accounts with high levels of access, we hope to make Wikimedia wikis more secure for everyone. Please read the full text of the proposal here, and make your voice heard at the RFC.

Thank you

Happy Public Domain Day 2016!

Logo Public Domain Day
Logo Public Domain Day

Feel free to translate this message in your language!

On January 1 we celebrate Public Domain Day as many works of authors who died 70+ years ago now enter the public domain and can be used freely.

Let us be aware: copyright is temporary. It only lasts during the authors lifetime and 70 years afterwards (in most countries). During those years it is limiting Wikipedia and her sister projects in showing works of art, literature, public art and buildings in countries without freedom of panorama, and more in the articles. But now a new batch is freed from copyrights!

An overview of images and texts that are restored or added to the Wikimedia Commons, are collected on: this page.

Many of these files still need a place in articles. You can help!

You can also help by uploading new files of subjects that are freed of copyrights.
You can also help by tagging all requests for deletion pages with the category when the file can be restored, which will be/was deleted.

As I follow the log of restored files this week, more images and texts will follow. If still files or texts are missing in the list, let me know or add them yourselves.

A very happy Public Domain Day! Romaine (разговор) 14:02, 2. јануар 2016. (CET)[одговори]

2016 WMF Strategy consultation

Помозите у превођењу на свој језик

Hello, all.

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has launched a consultation to help create and prioritize WMF strategy beginning July 2016 and for the 12 to 24 months thereafter. This consultation will be open, on Meta, from 18 January to 26 February, after which the Foundation will also use these ideas to help inform its Annual Plan. (More on our timeline can be found on that Meta page.)

Your input is welcome (and greatly desired) at the Meta discussion, 2016 Strategy/Community consultation.

Apologies for English, where this is posted on a non-English project. We thought it was more important to get the consultation translated as much as possible, and good headway has been made there in some languages. There is still much to do, however! We created m:2016 Strategy/Translations to try to help coordinate what needs translation and what progress is being made. :)

If you have questions, please reach out to me on my talk page or on the strategy consultation's talk page or by email to mdennis@wikimedia.org.

I hope you'll join us! Maggie Dennis via MediaWiki message delivery (разговор) 20:07, 18.

14:00 UTC (16:00 CEST, 10:00 EDT, 07:00 PDT).

They will post any changes on that schedule. Биће још обавештења о овоме. Молимо Вас да ове информације поделите са заједницом. /Johan (WMF) (разговор) 00:50, 18. април 2016. (CEST)[одговори]

Wikipedia to the Moon

Hello! Sorry that this is in English only, but we are using village pump messaging in order to reach as many language communities as possible. Wrong page? Please fix it here.

This is an invitation to all Wikipedians: Wikimedia Deutschland has been given data space to include Wikipedia content in an upcoming mission to the Moon. (No joke!) We have launched a community discussion about how to do that, because we feel that this is for the global community of editors. Please, join the discussion on Meta-Wiki (and translate this invitation to your language community)! Best, Moon team at Wikimedia Deutschland 17:35, 21. април 2016. (CEST)

Additional machine translation support enabled today for Content Translation

Hello, machine translation support for Content Translation (beta feature) has now been extended for users of Serbian Wikipedia and in addition to Apertium, Yandex has also been enabled. It can be used when translating Wikipedia articles into Serbian with Content Translation. To start using this service, please choose ‘’Yandex.Translate’’ from the ‘’Automatic Translation’’ dropdown menu that you see on the sidebar after you start translating an article. Please note, machine translation is available from all the languages that are supported by Yandex.Translate, but Content Translation can still be used in the usual manner for translating from all languages, with or without machine translation support.

Wikimedia Foundation’s Legal team and Yandex had collaborated earlier to work out an agreement that allows the use of Yandex.Translate without compromising Wikipedia’s policy of attribution of rights, privacy of our users and brand representation. Since November 2015, Yandex machine translation has been used for articles translated for Wikipedias in many languages. Details about Yandex translation services, including a summary of the contract are available on this page. More information about the machine translation services in Content Translation is available on this page. We request you to kindly take a look at these pages.

We have tested the service for use on the Serbian Wikipedia, but there could be unknown problems that we are not aware of yet. Please do let us know on our Project Talk page or phabricator if you face any problems using Content Translation. This message is only in English and we will be very grateful if it could be translated into Serbian for other users of this Wikipedia. Thank you. Where to put new Wikipedias (language codes) in Serbian interwiki sorting order?

Most likely, 2001:981, you followed a link to this Wikipedia (sr) while signed in globally and this added sr to the list of Wikipedias where your login works. Maybe you should look into de-merging your account (if that's possible). Oberbahnhof (w:talk) 00:13, 30. мај 2016. (CEST)[одговори]
Same with me, I am registered on German Wikipedia and have no connection with the Serbian one whatsoever, could please somebody stop that spam bot from randomly adding people. regards --Dogross (разговор) 02:32, 17. јун 2016. (CEST)[одговори]
@Dogross и Milicevic01: It seems like Oberbahnhof's reasoning applies here. If you check your global account info, it looks like it was attached to this wiki at 10:24 p.m. on June 12, 2016, while the bot sent you a welcome message at 10:06 p.m. on June 16, 2016. Seems like a delayed welcome message to me. I've pinged the bot's owner anyway, just 'cuz I want to know how the bot figures out when to send the message if it hasn't done so instantly. By the way, let's not blow this out of proportion by treating it like it's some sort of unthinkable spam. It's just a welcome message, for crying out loud. – Srdjan m (разговор) 09:09, 17. јун 2016. JavaScript

Hi. I can see that this project has old JavaScript that needs to be updated. I would happily make the required updates myself, but I would have to – at least temporarily – become an admin here to do that (because the relevant pages are in the MediaWiki namespace). I have already made these updates on a number of other projects, so it would be very easy for me to do this. If no one does anything, some JavaScript-related tools will break later this year. If you want me to make these updates, you can grant me admin rights and I will make the updates as soon as I can. Nirmos (разговор) 18:30, 6. јун 2016. (CEST)[одговори]

Wikipedia to the Moon: voting has begun

Hello, after six weeks of community discussion about Wikipedia to the Moon, there are now 10 different proposals for content for the mission. Starting today, you can vote for them on Meta-Wiki, and decide what we will work on: a Wikipedia canon, different lists, the Moon in 300 languages, an astronomy editathon, featured articles, articles about technology, endangered things, or DNA-related topics. You can even vote against community involvement. Voting is open until 24 June. Sorry that this message is again in English only, but we are using village pumps to reach as many communities as possible, so that everyone knows they can vote. Wikipedia to the Moon: invitation to edit

Three weeks ago, you were invited to vote on how to take Wikipedia articles to the Moon. Community voting is over and the winning idea is to send all ‘’featured articles and lists’’ to the Moon. This decision means that, starting today, Wikipedians from all language communities are warmly invited to intensively work on their best articles and lists, and submit them to Wikipedia to the Moon. The central site to coordinate between communities will be Meta-Wiki. You will find an overview and more information there. Hopefully, we will be able to represent as many languages as possible, to show Wikipedia’s diversity. Please feel kindly invited to edit on behalf of your community and tell us about your work on featured content!

Compact Links coming soon to this wiki

Помозите у превођењу на свој језик

Screenshot of Compact Language Links interlanguage list

Hello, I wanted to give a heads up about an upcoming feature for this wiki which you may seen already in the Tech News. Compact Language Links has been available as a beta-feature on all Wikimedia wikis since 2014. With compact language links enabled, users are shown a much shorter list of languages on the interlanguage link section of an article (see image). This will be enabled as a feature in the coming week for all users, which can be turned on or off using a preference setting. We look forward to your feedback and please do let us know if you have any questions. Details about Compact Language Links can be read in the project documentation.

Due to the large scale enablement of this feature, we have had to use MassMessage for this announcement and as a result it is only written in English. We will really appreciate if this message can be translated for other users of this wiki. The main announcement can also be translated on this page. Thank you. Compact Language Links enabled in this wiki today

Помозите у превођењу на свој језик

Screenshot of Compact Language Links interlanguage list

Compact Language Links has been available as a beta-feature on all Wikimedia wikis since 2014. With compact language links enabled, users are shown a much shorter list of languages on the interlanguage link section of an article (see image). Based on several factors, this shorter list of languages is expected to be more relevant for them and valuable for finding similar content in a language known to them. More information about compact language links can be found in the documentation.

From today onwards, compact language links has been enabled as the default listing of interlanguage links on this wiki. However, using the button at the bottom, you will be able to see a longer list of all the languages the article has been written in. The setting for this compact list can be changed by using the checkbox under User Preferences -> Appearance -> Languages

The compact language links feature has been tested extensively by the Wikimedia Language team, which developed it. However, in case there are any problems or other feedback please let us know on the project talk page. It is to be noted that on some wikis the presence of an existing older gadget that was used for a similar purpose may cause an interference for compact language list. We would like to bring this to the attention of the admins of this wiki. Full details are on this phabricator ticket (in English).

Due to the large scale enablement of this feature, we have had to use MassMessage for this announcement and as a result it is only written in English. We will really appreciate if this message can be translated for other users of this wiki. Thank you. On behalf of the Wikimedia Language team: Runa Bhattacharjee (WMF) (talk)-04:26, 15. јул 2016.
