Glyptothorax pripada rodu somova, redu Siluriformes iz porodice Sisoridae. Glyptothorax je ujedno najrasprostranjenija u ovom rodu, a nove vrste se redovno otkrivaju.[1] Ove vrste nastanjuju sliv Crnog mora, predele severne Turske, područja juga i istoka reke Jangcekjang u Kini i širom Indokine, sve do ostrva Java u Indoneziji.[2] Takođe su popisane u Anadoliji (u slivovima reka Eufrat i Tigar) i u predelu jugoistočne Azije. Rod je vrlo raznolik na Indijskom potkontinentu.[3] Vrste u jugoističnoj Aziji su ograničeno rasprostranjene.[4]

Ovaj rod se lako razlikuje od ostalih iz porodice Sisoridae, po tome što imaju šare na grudima, za razliku od drugih.[2] Leđna peraja i petrokralna peraja imaju jake bodlje, dok je leđni deo glatak ili sa malim bodljama. Glava je mala, telo je izduženo, a koža glatka, dok su oči male i leđno postavljene. Glyptothorax ima debele i mesnate usne, dok su otvori za škrge dosta široki.[2]

Kao i drugi iz porodice Sisoridae, ove ribe su reofili i nastanjuju se u potocima, gde su prilagođene za život.[4]
