Sauria je tradicionalno bila podred guštera koji su, prije 1800. godine, bili krokodili. Redefinisana je kao skupina koja sadrži najnovijeg zajedničkog pretka kladusa Archosauromorpha i kladusa Lepidosauromorpha i svih njihovih potomaka;[1] kao takva, obično se mislilo da je Sauria krunska skupina Diapsida.[2] Međutim, skorašnje genomske studije[3][4][5] i obimne studije u fosilnim zapisima[6] ukazuju da su kornjače usko povezane sa Archosauria, a ne sa kladusom Parareptilia kako se ranije mislilo. Sauria se može posmatrati kao krunska skupina svih savremenih gmizavaca (uključujući ptice) unutar veće skupine kladusa Sauropsida
