Robert Barton
Robert Barton (8. februar 1577. — 25. januar 1640) bio je engleski pisac i saradnik Oksfordskog univerziteta, koji je napisao enciklopedijsku knjigu Anatomija melanholije .

Rođen 1577. u dobrostojećoj plemićkoj porodici , Barton je pohađao dve gimnazije i upisao se u Brejsnous Koledžu u Oksfordu 1593. godine, sa 15 godina. Bartonovo obrazovanje na Oksfordu bilo je neuobičajeno dugo, verovatno je trajalo duže zbog njegovog bolovanja od melanholije, tako da je rano prebačeno u Krajstčurč (Oksford) . Barton je dobio MA i BD, a do 1607. bio je kvalifikovan kao tutor. Već 1603. godine, Barton se prepustio svojim ranim književnim kreacijama na Oksfordu, uključujući neke latinske pesme, sada izgubljenu dramu koju je ranije izvedenuu pred i kritikovanu od strane kralja Džejms I Stjuart, i njegovu jedinu sačuvanu dramu: akademsku satiru pod nazivom Philosophaster. Ovo delo, iako manje cenjeno od Bartonovog remek-dela, „primilo je više pažnje od većine do danas sačuvanih primera univerzitetske drame“.[3]
Nešto nakon što je magistrirao 1605. godine, Barton je pokušao da napusti univerzitet. Iako nikada nije u potpunosti uspeo u svom naumu, uspeo je da dobije beneficijum crkve Svetog Tome mučenika u Oksfordu preko univerziteta i spoljnog pokroviteljstva za dobrobit Velsbija i rektora Sigrejva.Službovao je u mnogim manjim administrativnim ulogama i kao bibliotekar biblioteke Krajstčurča, od 1624. do svoje smrti. Vremenom je prihvatio svoj izolovan život u bibliotekama Oksforda, govoreći visoko o svojoj alma mater u celoj Anatomiji.
Bartonovo najpoznatije i najvažnije delo je Anatomija melanholije. Prvi put je objavljeno 1621. godine, ponovo je štampano sa Bartonovim dopunama, ne manje od pet puta. Degresivno i lavirintno delo, Barton je pisao koliko da ublaži sopstvenu melanholiju, toliko i da pomogne drugima. Konačno izdanje knjige ima više od 500.000 reči. Knjiga je prožeta citatima i parafrazama mnogih autoriteta, kako klasičnih tako i savremenih, što je kulminacija čitave erudicije autora.
Barton je umro 1640. Njegova velika lična biblioteka bila je podeljena između Biblioteke Bodleana i Krajstučurča. Anatomiju su proučavali i plagirali mnogi autori tokom života i nakon smrti autora, ali je tokom 18. veka ušla u zatišje u popularnosti. Tek je otkriće plagijata Lorensa Sterna oživelo interesovanje za Bartonova dela u 19. veku, posebno među romantičarima. Anatomija je dobila više akademske pažnje u 20. i 21. veku. Bez obzira na njegovu popularnost, Barton je uvek privlačio ugledne čitaoce, uključujući Semjuela Džonsona, Bendžamina Frenklina, Džona Kitsa, Vilijama Oslera i Semjuela Beketa.
