Karlo III Debeli (nem. Karl III.; 832—13. januar 888) bio je car Svetog rimskog carstva (879—887), kralj Nemačke (882—887), kralj Francuske (884—887), kralj Italije (879—887), kralj Alemanije i Retije (876—887) i kralj Gornje Burgundije (879—887). Po prvi put nakon Karla Velikog ujedinio je njegovo carstvo.
Tokom svog života, Karlo je postao vladar raznih carstava bivšeg carstva Karla Velikog. Odobreno mu je lordstvo nad Alemanijom 876. godine, nakon podele Istočne Franačke, on je nasledio italijanski tron nakon abdikacije njegovog starijeg brata Karlomana Bavarskog koji je bio onesposobljen moždanim udarom.[1][2][3] Papa Jovan VIII ga je krunisao kao cara 881. godine, a njegovom nasleđivanjem teritorija njegovog brata Ludviga Mlađeg (Saksonije i Bavarije) sledeće godine su ujedinjena kraljevstva Istočne Frankije. Nakon smrti njegovog rođaka Karlomana II 884. godine, on je nasledio celokupnu Zapadnu Frankiju, čime je ujedinjeno celokupno Karolinško carstvo.
Obično se smatra letargičnim i nesposobnim - poznato je da je bio hronično bolestan i veruje se da je patio od epilepsije — dva puta je kupio mir sa vikinškim pljačkašima, uključujući i zloglasnu Opsadu Pariza (885—886), što je dovelo do njegovog pada.
Nadimak i broj[uredi | uredi izvor]
Nadimak „Karlo Debeli” (latinski Carolus Crassus) ne potiče iz njegovog vremena. Prvi put ga je koristio Saksonski analista (anonimni „saksonski analista”) u dvanaestom veku. Ne postoji savremena referenca o Karlovoj fizičkoj veličini, ali se nadimak ustalio i predstavlja uobičajeno ime u većini modernih evropskih jezika (fransuski Charles le Gros, nemački Karl der Dicke, italijanski Carlo il Grosso).[4]
Broj u njegovom imenu potiče iz njegovog doba. Regino, Karlov savremenik koji je zabeležio njegovu smrt, naziva ga „Carem Karlom, trećim tog imena i dostojanstva” (latinski Carolus imperator, tertius huius nominis et dignitatis).[5]
Kralj Italije i car Svetog rimskog carstva[uredi | uredi izvor]
Bio je sin Ludviga I Nemačkog, pa je nasledio Alemaniju i Retiju 876. godine. Karloman Bavarski posle infarkta je postao nesposoban da vlada Italijom, pa je abdicirao u korist svoga brata Karla III Debelog. Karlo Debeli je tada postao i kralj Italije i car Svetog rimskog carstva.
Nasledstvima ujedinjuje celo carstvo Karla Velikog[uredi | uredi izvor]
Nasleđuje svoga brata Ludviga Mlađeg 882. i time postaje kralj cele Nemačke. Posle smrti Karlomana Francuskog 12. decembra 884, Karlo Debeli postaje i kralj Francuske, pa je nakratko objedinio celo Karolinško carstvo izuzev Burgundije.
Nesposoban vladar[uredi | uredi izvor]
U celom carstvu su porasle nade u opšti preporod zapadne Evrope, ali Karlo Debeli se nije pokazao dostojan toga zadatka. Bio je nesposoban, a osim toga često je bolovao. Veruje se da je bolovao od epilepsije. Preduzeo je nekoliko neuspešnih ekspedicija protiv Saracena u Italiji.
Vikinzi su opsedali Pariz tokom 885. i 886. godine. Karlo Debeli, koji je bio vladar Francuske, Nemačke i Italije dopustio je da Vikinzi toliko dugo opsedaju jedan tako važan grad. Kada je konačno došao Karlo Debeli sa velikom vojskom raspršio je Vikinge. Umesto da ih dokrajči velikom vojskom on im daje novac da se povuku, što je izazvalo ogorčenje i pobune.
Pobune i podela[uredi | uredi izvor]
Pobunu u Nemačkoj je predvodio Arnulf Karantinski, nezakoniti sin Karlomana Bavarskog. Arnulf Karantinski zauzima Nemačku u novembru 887. godine. Karlo Debeli nije ništa učinio da to spreči. Odlazi u manastir gde umire nakon dva meseca 13. januara 888. godine. Carstvo se ponovo raspada. U Francuskoj ga nasleđuje grof Odo Pariski, u Italiji Berengar Furlanski, Rudolf I od Burgundije preuzima Burgundiju i Luj Slepi preuzima Provansu.
