Pangea
Pangea (grč. Πᾶνγαία — „svezemlje“, od grč. πᾶν — „sve“ i grč. Γαῖα — „Zemlja„)[1] je naziv za superkontinent koji je postojao tokom paleozoika i mezozoika,[2] pre nego što ga je proces tektonike ploča razdvojio na Lauraziju na severnoj Zemljinoj polulopti, i Gondvanu na južnoj Zemljinoj polulopti.[3][4] Ta dva novonastala kontinenta je razdvajao okean Tetis, a oni su se dalje delili na današnje kontinente. Ime je skovao Alfred Vegener, vodeći promoter ideje pomicanja kontinenata iz 1915. godine. Vodena masa koja je opruživala Pangeu se naziva Pantalasa (od grč. θάλασσα — „more“).[5]
Poreklo koncepta[uredi | uredi izvor]
Ime „Pangaea“ je izvedeno od starogrčkog pan (πᾶν, „sve, celokupan, ceo“) i Gaja ili Gaea (Γαῖα, „Majka Zemlja, zemlja“).[6][11] Alfred Vegener, začetnik naučne teorije pomeranja kontinenata, u svojoj publikaciji Poreklo kontinenata (Die Entstehung der Kontinente) iz 1912. izneo je hipotezu da su kontinenti nekada činili susednu kopnenu masu, uz potkrepljujuće dokaze.[12] On je proširio svoju hipotezu u svojoj knjizi Poreklo kontinenata i okeana (Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane) iz 1915. godine, u kojoj je pretpostavio da su, pre nego što su se raspali i pomerili na svoje sadašnje lokacije, svi kontinenti formirali jedan superkontinent koji je on pod nazivom Urkontinent.
Ime „Pangaea“ se pojavljuje u izdanju Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane iz 1920. godine, ali samo jednom, kada Vegener naziva drevni superkontinent „Pangeom karbona“.[13] Vegener je koristio germanizovani oblik „Pangäa“, ali je ime ušlo u nemačku i englesku naučnu literaturu (1922[14] i 1926. godine) u latinizovanom obliku „Pangaea“ (od grčkog „Pangaia“), posebno zbog simpozijuma Američkog udruženja geologa nafte u novembru 1926.[15]
Vegener je prvobitno predložio da je raspad Pangee bio posledica centripetalnih sila usled Zemljine rotacije koje deluju na visokim kontinentima. Međutim, lako se pokazalo da je ovaj mehanizam fizički neuverljiv, što je odložilo prihvatanje hipoteze Pangee.[16] Artur Holms je predložio verovatniji mehanizam konvekcije plašta,[17] koji je, zajedno sa dokazima dobijenim mapiranjem okeanskog dna posle Drugog svetskog rata, doveo do razvoja i prihvatanja teorije tektonike ploča. Ova teorija pruža sada široko prihvaćeno objašnjenje za postojanje i raspad Pangee.[18]
Dokazi o postojanju[uredi | uredi izvor]
Geografija kontinenata koji se graniče sa Atlantskim okeanom bila je prvi dokaz o postojanju Pangee. Naizgled blisko uklapanje obala Severne i Južne Amerike sa Evropom i Afrikom primećeno je skoro čim su ove obale ucrtane. Prvi koji je sugerisao da su ovi kontinenti nekada bili spojeni, a kasnije razdvojeni, možda je bio Abraham Ortelije 1596. godine.[19] Pažljive rekonstrukcije su pokazale da je neusklađenost na konturi od 500 hvati (3.000 stopa; 910 metara) bila manja od 130 km (81 mi), i tvrdilo se da je to previše dobro da bi se pripisivalo slučaju.[20]
Dodatni dokazi za Pangeu nalaze se u geologiji susednih kontinenata, uključujući podudaranje geoloških trendova između istočne obale Južne Amerike i zapadne obale Afrike. Polarna ledena kapa iz perioda karbona pokrivala je južni kraj Pangeje. Ledene naslage, posebno gromade ilovače, iste starosti i strukture nalaze se na mnogim odvojenim kontinentima koji bi bili zajedno na kontinentu Pangea.[21] Kontinuitet planinskih lanaca pruža dodatne dokaze, kao što je lanac Apalačkih planina koji se proteže od jugoistočnih Sjedinjenih Država do Kaledonida Irske, Britanije, Grenlanda i Skandinavije.[22]
