Megistotherium (Megistoterijum — „najveća zvijer”) je izumrli rod placentalnih sisara, iz izumrle parafiletske potporodice Hyainailourinae unutar izumrle parafiletske porodice Hyainailouridae, koji je u periodu ranog miocena nastanjivao područje Afrike.[4][5][6][7][8]

Vrsta Megistotherium osteothlastes je dostzala veličinu mrkog medvjeda i težila oko 500 kg.[9] Lobanja ove vrste je bila duga 66,4 cm. Zapremina mozga u lobanji kod ove vrste je iznosila 335 ml.[10] Zubna formula kod ove vrste je 1.1.4.3?3.1.4.3.[11] Za razliku od drugi predstavnika reda Hyaenodonta, ova vrsta je posjedovala samo jedan par veliki sjekutića u gornjoj vilici.
Ponašanje i paleoekologija[uredi | uredi izvor]
Vrsta Megistotherium osteothlastes je bila veliki kopneni predator koji je u prošlosti Afrike nastanjivao kopnene ekosisteme, hraneći se velikim sisarima i leševima.[12]
