U današnje vreme se psihologija definiše kao „naučno proučavanje ponašanja i mentalnih procesa”. Filozofsko zanimanje za ljudski um i ponašanje datira još od drevnih civilizacija Egipta, Persije, Grčke, Kine i Indije.[1]

Psihologija graniči sa raznim drugim poljima, uključujući fiziologiju, neuronauku, veštačku inteligenciju, sociologiju, antropologiju, kao i filozofiju i druge komponente humanističkih nauka. Istorija psihologije kao naučne studije uma i ponašanja datira još od starih Grka. Postoje takođe dokazi psihološke misli u starom Egiptu. Veoma visok nivo rada na naukama o umu može se naći u vedskim spisima Sanatane Darm (hinduizam), gde je primena određenog principa deo indijske jogijske prakse.

Psihologija je bila grana domene filozofije sve do 1870-ih, kada je u Nemačkoj razvijena kao nezavisna naučna disciplina. Psihologija kao samosvesno polje eksperimentalnog proučavanja započela je 1879. godine u Lajpcigu u Nemačkoj, kada je Vilhelm Vunt osnovao prvu laboratoriju posvećenu isključivo psihološkim istraživanjima u Nemačkoj. Vunt je takođe bio prvi koji se o sebi izjasnio kao psiholog (značajan prethodnik Vunta bio je Ferdinand Ibervaser (1752-1812) koji se 1783. godine proglasio profesorom empirijske psihologije i logike i držao predavanja o naučnoj psihologiji na Starom univerzitetu u Minsteru , Nemačka[2]). Ostali važni rani saradnici na ovom polju su Herman Ebinghaus (pionir u istraživanju memorije), Vilijam Džejme (američki otac pragmatizma) i Ivan Pavlov (koji je razvio postupke povezane sa klasičnim kondicioniranjem).
