Turci su na današnji prostor stigli iz srednje Azije i smestili se u središtu Male Azije: Anadolskoj visoravni. Bili su tamo vekovima pre nego što su osvojili druge delove Anadolije, zaposeli Istanbul i napredovali prema Evropi, Africi i Aziji stvarajući carstvo.[1][2] Mala Azija je most između Azije i Evrope kojim su se kretali mnogi migranti. U periodu od preko dve hiljade godina ovde su živeli predstavnici mnogih civilizacija – Hetiti, grčki Frigijci, Lidijanci, Isaurianci, Kapodokijanci i Vizantinci itd.
