Isak Baševis Singer (hebr. יצחק באַשעוויס זינגער, Isaac Bashevis Singer; Leonćin, 14. jul 1904[a] — Serfsajd, 24. jul 1991), jevrejski je književnik[9][10][11][12] i dobitnik Nobelove nagrade za književnost 1978.[13][14] Vodeća ličnost u jidiškom književnom pokretu, nagrađen je sa dve Nacionalne nagrade za književnost SAD, jednom za književnost za decu za svoje memoare Dan zadovoljstva: Priče dečaka koji odrasta u Varšavi (1970)[15] i jednu za beletristiku za svoju kolekciju Kruna od perja i druge priče (1974).[16]

Rođen u Poljskoj, koja je tada bila deo Ruske Imperije, u gradiću Leonćinu,[17] 14. jula 1904. godine, u rabinskoj porodici,[17] Isak Baševis Singer je jevrejsko obrazovanje stekao u verskoj školi svoga oca, i stekao status rabina.[18] Tim poslom se nikada nije bavio, kao ni njegov stariji brat Izrael Ješua Singer, kasnije poznat pisac jidiša.

Godine 1925. Singer na konkursu jednog varšavskog lista za priču osvaja prvu nagradu, potom, sve češće piše priče, novele i štampa ih po jidiš novinama i časopisima. Mada se oslanjao na tradiciju fantastike u domicilnoj književnosti, pisao je o savremenim likovima i njihovim problemima, ali je dugo izbegavao složenije socijalne konotacije.

Singer, 1935. godine, pred nadirućim nacizmom, odlazi, za bratom, u SAD, u Njujork, gde nastavlja da piše umetničku prozu, radeći i za jidiš novine.[19] Pavković ističe: „Svet realnosti i mašte, demona i ljudi se u njegovim prozama neodvojivo mešaju u dinamičnu i provokativnu literaturu, kakvu jidiš književnost do tada nije poznavala.”

Delo mu je posvećeno Jevrejima istočne Evrope koji su živeli po getoima i jevrejskim emigrantima u Americi. Izborom maternjeg jezika, dugo je bio osuđen na vrlo uzak krug čitalaca jidiša (na koji je i prevodio – Knuta Hamsuna, Remarka, „Čarobni breg” Tomasa Mana).

Posle objavljivanja pripovetke „Gimpel Luda”, 1953. godine, u engleskom prevodu Sola Beloua, na velika vrata ulazi u svetsku književnost. Prevode ga sve više, već sredinom šezdesetih jedan je od najpopularnijih pisaca u Americi. Punu svetsku reputaciju stiče dobijanjem Nobelove nagrade, 1978. godine.[19] Preminuo je 24. jula 1991. godine u Majamiju.[19]

Autor je niz zbirki priča, poput čuvene „Metuzalemova smrt i druge priče”, i slavnih romana, prevedenih i na srpski: „Mađioničar iz Lublina”, „Sotona u Goraju”, „Ludak”, „Neprijatelji”, „Rob”, „Senke na Hadsonu”[18]... Autobiografsko delo je „U sudnici mog oca”.
