Decembar je poslednji ili dvanaesti mesec u godini i ima 31 dan. Početak meseca po julijanskom kalendaru počinje 14-tog dana gregorijanskog kalendara. Po Crkvenom računanju ciklusa vremena je četvrti mesec.
Decembar je dobio ime po latinskoj reči decem (što znači deset) jer je prvobitno bio deseti mesec u godini u kalendaru Romula[1][2] oko 750. p. n. e. koji je počinjao u martu. Zimski dani nakon decembra nisu bili uključeni ni u jedan mesec. Kasnije su od bezmesečnog perioda stvoreni meseci januar i februar i dodati na početak kalendara, ali je decembar zadržao ime.[3]
U Starom Rimu,[4] kao jedna od četiri Agonalije, dan u čast Sol Indigesa održavan je 11. decembra, kao i Septimoncijum.[5][6][7][8] Dies natalis (rođendan) održavan je u hramu Tere 13. decembra, Konsualija je održana 15. decembra, Saturnalija je održavana 17–23. decembra, Opikonsivija je održavana 19. decembra, Divalija je održavana 21. decembra, Larentalija je održana 1. decembra. 23, a rođendan Sol Inviktusa je održavan 25. decembra. Ovi datumi ne odgovaraju savremenom gregorijanskom kalendaru.
Anglosaksonci su decembar–januar nazivali Ġēolamonaþ (savremeni engleski: „Yule mesec“). Francuski republikanski kalendar[9][10][11] sadržao je decembar unutar meseci Frimer i Nivo.
Poreklo reči ili etimologija[uredi | uredi izvor]
Decembar je dobio ime od latinskog (December). Mesec je nazvan po „decem” (deseti mesec) rimskog kalendara.[12]
Decembar se kod Srba, kao i kod nekih slovenskih naroda se naziva još i božićni mesec, prosinac i koledar kao i u starosrpskom. Na staroruskom studenij, slično staroslovenskom i srpskom studen. Na slovenačkom i ukrajinskom gruden slično poljskom grudžien. Kod Hrvata i Srba se naziva prosinac, slično češkom prosinec. Na beloruskom snežanь.

Decembar sadrži zimski solsticij na severnoj hemisferi, dan sa najmanje dnevnih sati, i letnji solsticij na južnoj hemisferi, dan sa najviše dnevnih sati (isključujući polarne regione u oba slučaja). Decembar na severnoj hemisferi je sezonski ekvivalent junu na južnoj hemisferi i obrnuto. Na severnoj hemisferi, početak astronomske zime je tradicionalno 21. decembar ili dan solsticija.
Kiše meteora koje se javljaju u decembru su Andromedidi (25. septembar – 6. decembar, vrhunac oko 9. novembra), Kanis-Minoridi (4. decembar – 15. decembar, vrhunac oko 10–11. decembra), Koma Berenisidi (12. decembar – 23. decembar, sa vrhuncem oko 16. decembra), Delta Kanceridi (14. decembra do 14. februara, glavni pljusak od 1. januara do 24. januara, vrhunac 17. januara), Geminidi (13–14. decembar), Monocerotidi (7. decembra do 20. decembra, vrhunac 9. decembra. Ovaj pljusak takođe može da počne u novembru), Fenicidi (od 29. novembra do 9. decembra, sa vrhuncem oko 5/6. decembra), Kvadrantidi (obično januarski pljusak, ali može početi i u decembru), Sigma hidridi (4–15. decembar) i Ursidi (17. do 25/26. decembra, sa vrhuncem oko 22. decembra).
